Breakdown to Breakthrough: Astrology of Jan. 8 – Jan. 14, 2019

Wanna fight?

The week is heavy with cautious Capricorn’s influence and yet the planet of mind, Mercury making a stressed square aspect to the god of war, Mars (exact Jan. 8) setting off existing tensions or initiating new conflict. If you feel the heat of anger rising while you’re speaking to someone, try to put on the brakes and evaluate if you’ll get what you want through shoving or arguing. It could be very hard to catch yourself, though! Mars is in Aries (until Feb. 14) and as the aggressive part of this combo, will be strong and inclined to move fast. On the other hand, Mars-Mercury can help with working through differing perspectives on an issue. You’ll find Mars-Mercury in the skilled debater and the passionate advocate. Fighting (Mars) with words (Mercury) can drive people apart from each other—Mars as the knife edge that separates—but this influence can also help to define or carve out differing (Mars) ideas (Mercury). The key is a willingness to be curious about our anger rather than merely possessed by it. Why does this idea, issue or point matter so much? Does it? If so, what is the best way to get what we want?

Breakdown to breakthrough

Expansive Jupiter is making a dynamic sesquisquare (135°) aspect to liberating Uranus (exact Jan. 9) which can add to the impulsiveness of the moment. But Jupiter-Uranus will also assist the contemplation of the more generative aspects of the currently heavy zeitgeist that is defined by Saturn-Pluto (2018–2021). Saturn-Pluto is carrying the overarching narrative into which all other stories are woven or subsumed. It is driving the momentum to “face reality” and to have a real encounter with what has been previously hidden under the veneer of civilization. Jupiter-Uranus is a very different piece of the evolutionary puzzle containing unexpected breakthroughs. Jupiter-Uranus symbolizes the opening of new vistas of understanding in various human endeavors and the impulse to break free from suffocating structures. This week will be particularly good for reflecting on how the breakdown (Pluto) of consensus reality (Saturn) can create the opening for very positive and life-affirming changes. Perhaps it is an ongoing project of yours or a new inspiration—give it some attention this week in order to plant your ideas, projects and efforts within the reality of the trauma of the birth experience of Saturn-Pluto. How can the breakdown help the breakthrough you’re dreaming of and working for?

Synergy versus power play

Sociable Venus has just entered Sagittarius (Jan. 7 – Feb. 3) and will aid our efforts to network with others and expand our spheres of support, cooperation and reciprocity. She is also making a hard semisquare (45°) aspect to the lord of the underworld Pluto (exact Jan. 12) which can add a little oomph to our connections—for better and for worse! Along with the egoic Sun’s conjunction to Pluto (exact Jan. 11), we may have to explore our ability to share power with others and get real about our true orientation to the cosmological power of synergy, which is the power of working together. Synergy may require us to shift our perspective on boundaries and identity, adopting new contexts and joining with others to create larger wholes. True synergy results in more energy, creativity and productivity for all—it is a mutually beneficial relationship. But Sun-Pluto emphasizes our own personal quest for power: the ability to cause or prevent change that arises from the fact of our deep interrelatedness with all beings. Do we crave power over others? Do we battle for control? Can our identity expand to include the others—seen and unseen, human and other-than-human—whose active cooperation will magnify our own power, reach and effectiveness? This kind of expansion can surely be experienced as a breakdown and yet could give us one of the biggest breakthroughs of the year.

Healing Our Relationship to Belief: Astrology of December 4 – December 10, 2018

We welcome in the first full week of December with the Sagittarius New Moon on Dec. 6 at 11:20pm US/Pacific, highlighting our ambitions to adventure, explore, learn and believe in something greater than ourselves. Sagittarius is considered the home sign of the royal planet Jupiter, whose significations are getting a signal boost since Jupiter entered Sagg about a month ago. As harsh as many realities are, Jupiter in Sagg can encourage us to seek out grounds for optimism or to (re-)establish our relationship with hope, meaning and our purpose in this lifetime. The quest for meaning is a primary quality of the sign of Sagittarius and those who have strong Sagg emphases will often find meaning in even the most challenging of circumstances, when all others would despair. Our relationship to the planet Jupiter reflects our sense of optimism, faith and hope for the future, as Jupiter correlates to good fortune and favor, the ability to grow, opportunities, and philosophy as “a love (philos) of wisdom (sophia).”

Horoscope of the 2018 Sagittarius New Moon
2018 Sagittarius New Moon

This week’s New Moon in Sagg features storyteller Jupiter exactly at the midpoint between messenger Mercury and the fertile conjunction of Sun and Moon. This means that Jupiter—the planet of expansion—draws Mercury—the planet of the mind—into the New Moon configuration and the four planets can work together to infuse any intentions you might like to set for the lunar month ahead. One possibility is to welcome in the healing available from the Jupiter square Neptune world transit (Nov. 2018 – Nov. 2019) which could be a great ally to the intensity and rigidity of the Saturn-Pluto world transit that’s bringing some urgency to our evolutionary process. Jupiter-Neptune is soft, empathic, forgiving, endowed with grand visionary potential and imbues imagination and spiritual experience with an ecstatic, celebratory or humorous quality. In a less integrated form, Jupiter-Neptune can represent the grand delusion, spiritual materialism and an overblown, false religiosity.

Amongst the potentials of the current Jupiter-Neptune alignment is “healing the relationship to belief itself.” Working with this New Moon to explore both your skepticism and your naivety is supported by the Mars conjunction to Neptune (exact Dec. 7) which is aspecting the New Moon. Mars-Neptune can appear as the spiritual warrior and Mars will bring a bit of complexity to Neptune’s square to the New Moon, which might otherwise render us very blurry and indistinct. Mars may function by way of irritation and following the lines of what ails us in order to find reconciliation or healing is suggested by the overall cosmic portrait. Particularly where violations of our boundaries or those whom we care about intersect our belief or our relationship to belief systems, ideologies and philosophies. Sagittarius and Jupiter want us to grow, not to remain in a “repetition compulsion,” the psychological tendency to re-enact traumas again and again and again, with the hope of having a different outcome. A different outcome will require a different viewpoint and the application of conscious self-reflection. Fortunately, Mercury returns to direct motion on Dec. 6 just prior to the New Moon’s exact conjunction, offering hope of thought processes that are more direct and on target. But Mercury’s slowed motion indicates value in moving slowly through thoughts, reflections and feelings. Particularly where injury and trauma is involved, it is important to move at the pace of the body rather than the mind.

Venus’ return to Scorpio (Dec. 2 – Jan. 7) in the wake of her recent retrograde adds to the picture of following the lines of what ails us in order to heal. Venus represents many seductions we can spend a lifetime pursuing: money, sex, love, community. She wants connection and harmony but can have such a hard time in Scorpio because she must first confront whatever is problematic or terrifying within our needs to give and receive love. It’s hard to feel balance, harmony and satisfaction when there is so much “stuff” to metabolize. And what does it mean to metabolize something? Metabolism describes separating nutrients from what is unusable and sorting each to an appropriate place. What is nutrient? What is material for the compost pile? What is a little bit of both? Don’t neglect the nutrient value of whatever may want to emerge from Scorpio’s hidden underworld. It is foundational to the Jupiterian path to wholeness.

The Quest for Accountability: Astrology of November 27 – December 3, 2018

We begin the week with Mercury’s retrograde backing over the Sun and Jupiter (exact Nov. 27 US/Pacific) in Sagittarius, signaling the halfway point of Mercury’s current retrograde period. Right around this time, we may receive information relevant to the substance of this retrograde, especially that material it would be helpful to review, rework, reconsider or revisit. This information may very well pertain to works you will write and perhaps publish, new philosophical insights, material you find worthy of teaching to others, and what of yourself will come to be shared with others as Jupiter makes his way into the interior of Sagittarius (through Dec. 2019). There could be a little bit of impatience or difficulty concentrating or focusing on what we should be investigating but we could try to incorporate our wanderings into our days. Jot down your stray thoughts in the moment and short reminders to later attend to the distractions that would threaten your focus. You may also find your sleep and your daytime concentration improved if, before going to bed, you take time to write down everything you intended but did not accomplish that day. Don’t reflect on it or make your notes neat and organized; let it all flow out in a stream of consciousness. Tell yourself before closing your eyes: I have it written down, so I can remember to get to it tomorrow.

Quote: "People pay for what they do, and still more, for what they have allowed themselves to become. And they pay for it simply: by the lives they lead." -James BaldwinThe Moon will enter Virgo on Nov. 29 until Dec. 1 US/Pacific, squaring the Sun in Sagittarius in her Last Quarter phase. During this part of the week, we may find ourselves in a more critical, fault-finding mode. Virgo in its unintegrated aspect can be fairly obsessed with “whose fault it is” and while the quest for accountability is necessary for justice making, beware of blowing things out of proportion or seeking a too simple answer. The strong Sagittarian currents can fuel arrogance and overconfidence, and as Mercury backs into Scorpio on Dec. 1, the desire to uncover deeper truths will rise. The danger here is descending into paranoia and scapegoating attitudes, especially as Venus makes her final opposition to Uranus (exact Nov. 30) and moves forward into Scorpio herself (Dec. 2). During her retrograde this year, Venus opposed Uranus on Oct. 31 and Sept. 12 and this final opposition of Venus retrograde may call forth the many upsets and unsettling shifts of 2018. Why did that happen? Who did this? Indeed, whose fault was that? Whatever disturbing or unwanted events remain unmetabolized may boil to the surface and seek out your care and attention. For those who have worked diligently with the twists of fate of 2018, Venus opposite Uranus this week may feel more like a test of hard-won stability and present an opportunity to solidify insight, new ways of relating and identifying oneself.

Set within the larger Saturn-Pluto cycle (2018-2021), the overlapping Mars and Venus retrogrades of 2018 carried with them the onset of “birth contractions” which will culminate in 2020 to 2021. If we think of Pluto as the base desire to persist, to exist, to be alive and Saturn as endings and death, historical circumstances and the necessities of being in a body—when the two come together, the desire to live meets the limits of that living. In response, new things wish to emerge, perhaps even a new version of yourself, your sense of family, reciprocity, belonging, community, sexuality, passion and guiding values. Unfortunately, this planetary archetypal collision between instinctive survival (Pluto) and real limitations (Saturn) can produce so much fear, paranoia and obsession with control—hence the rise of dictatorships and all manner of authoritarian institutions. This trend will intensify through 2019 and 2020, and taking a moment here near the end of 2018 to breathe, assess and re-assess the way we are living, how we direct our finite energy, the communities we serve and our deepest commitments can give us the grounds to be responsive rather than reactive to destructive/creative pressures of the anima mundi, or Soul of the World.

Within the Opposites: Gemini Full Moon of Nov. 2018

***Check out Real Imaginal Daily Divinations on Instagram!***

Following is an ode to the potentials within the Gemini Full Moon of 2018 (Nov. 22 at 9:39pm US/Pacific).

I write you as I return from a journey to the underworld catacombs to retrieve the lost ancestors, forgotten and excluded ancestors, the neglected ancestors…a journey of giving thanks to both the destructive and the creative aspects of those who gave me this existence. For how hard it is to fully appreciate the gifts our ancestors have given us. So many of those gifts can appear to be curses, ugly and unwanted. But held with care, under a sustained gaze and a willingness to suffer the deformities of time, even the unwanted offers strength to the kind of life we aspire to live.

The 2018 Full Moon in Gemini speaks to us of the delusions of force and the pitfalls of overconfidence. The sword of the mind and its desire to create sharp distinctions and to banish shadows becomes dangerous within the flux of kairos—the melting away of all that seems to be so permanent and everlasting. We are challenged to release our desire for clarity in the conventional sense and step into more murky waters, tempting us with both terror and trust. Stepping off into the murk offers is no guarantee of failure and no guarantee of success. There is only guarantee of the need to submit to the adventure of learning how to care—with an edge. The edges of learning, which are filled with awkwardness and confusion. The edges of desire, which seem to both guide and betray us. The edges of the traumatic, which lives within all of us in varieties both personal and transpersonal. The edges of resilience, which cope with the bottomless well of suffering in this world and what of it may be our personal lot to bear.

2018 Gemini Full Moon horoscope
2018 Gemini Full Moon

This is not to be too gloomy, not at all. “To bear” has many meanings—to bear children, to bear witness, to bear up and into this world. The poet Mary Oliver says that there is only one question: how to love this world? What does it mean to genuinely give thanks for EVERYTHING which led to this present moment? That which enabled you to even read this sentence, to breathe life and to feel and to serve that which you love? The Gemini Full Moon of 2018 suggests something that may be counter-intuitive to a sword-like mind that wants a world of black-and-white choices and simple oppositions of Good and Evil.

Easy, clear-cut reasoning may deceive us into thinking we have found safety and certainty and high moral ground. Instead, this Full Moon beckons us to swim in the murky waters of our relatedness and connections to all things. Swimming with trust and with fear—that is, with courage—towards genuine awareness of and sincere gratitude for our complicated past, because all of that history and ancestry gives birth to our present moment. Because this kind of gratitude will grant us our freedom. Freedom to enact more of the truth of who we really are and to return to our ancestors that which belongs to them. Ignorance of the past holds us in its chains and will restrict the ability to care along all of the edges of our present time. Despising the past also has a way of binding us to it and leads us to carry who and what we hate as a burden. It is as if we would become walking zombies of the past, with its misdeeds and confusion and suffering continuing to live on through us.

Of course, no one can simply leap into such waters and expect all to be resolved in one day. The Earth has been in formation for 4.5 billion years. The murk is real. So is the pain. And so is the joy of freedom from burdens which are not ours to carry. Even the past can heave a sigh of relief, freed from a twisted relationship to the present, freed to form wisdom and strength for our struggles and our successes of today. This can seem impossible and even unethical or taboo—but the Gemini Moon would wed itself to the Sagittarius Sun in these ways, according to the cosmic clock which these days churns us all from its most hidden depths.

The Big Push: Astrology of November 6 – November 12, 2018

***Check out Real Imaginal Daily Divinations on Instagram!***

After a year of traversing deep, dark Scorpio, the royal blood of Jupiter flows into his sparkly home sign of Sagittarius (Nov. 8), strengthening his power and lending favor to his activities. Jupiter’s positive nature is sometimes overemphasized and perhaps this is in keeping with his archetypal nature. And while he can correlate to unqualified success, good fortune, generosities, happiness and freedom, Jupiter’s general character simply describes expansion. Jupiter is the great magnifier, enlarging whatever he touches, hence his reputation for exaggeration, egoic grandiosity, excess, overdoing and overestimating things. Jupiter can therefore just as easily magnify misfortune as grant great benefits. In client work, I have even noticed a correlation between Jupiter square Moon natal aspects and the pattern of orphaned children along the mother line, whether mothers were physically or extremely emotionally absent to their children. That said, we can expect Jupiter’s time in Sagittarius (until Dec. 2019) to usher in some needed hope, optimism and belief in a higher power or higher good with which humanity can cooperate.

The retrograding planet of love and harmony, Venus will make a trine aspect to the god of war, Mars (exact Nov. 9) and if we have understood and started to embody the significance of Mars’ summer retrograde, we could very well receive some fruits of that work. The recent Mars retrograde (Jun. 2018 – Aug. 2018) featured some serious contemplation of our life’s direction, our motivations and our ability to follow through on commitments—as well as clearly discerning what commitments are ours to keep. And if all that was churned up by Mars retrograde has yet to really settle, this week might bring some further insight into making peace with our path through life.

2018 Scorpio New Moon

Along those lines, the Scorpio New Moon on Nov. 7, 2018 at 8:02am US/Pacific looks favorable for affirming a life of greater authenticity and imagination. It seems particularly helpful to invoke its support of your total health and help you sustain your power over the long-term. You might use this lunation to quietly plan a new or refresh an existing self-care routine as it’s an excellent time to assess what supports you and cut out whatever’s not working. You might prefer a more engaged exploration of your community-level support systems, both those you contribute to and those which you tap into. Who has your back and in what ways? Do you need to invest more in various communities of support or are you perhaps giving too much energy to your community-level support systems? Examples of such systems of support include peer groups, affinity groups, professional associations, cultural or community centers, schoolmates and school groups or your extended family.

Scoping further out to a broader view, the planetary herald of impermanence, Uranus returns to the fire sign of Aries (Nov. 6) for a final encore showing in Mars’ sign as we approach the end of a tumultuous 2018. The outer planets do carry significance for individual lives, but can also be interpreted as signifiers of the collective zeitgeist and movements within the collective human psyche. Uranus generally signifies revolution and the brash or confident attitude required to assert a new pattern or order of being, and the 13-year world transit of Uranus square Pluto (2007 – 2020) has ushered in all the instability, uncertainty and power struggles that accompany revolutions. It is ending on the extremely sobering note of Saturn conjunct Pluto (2018 – 2021), a planetary pair which conjoins every 34 – 35 years and can heighten the perceptions of mortality, fear and limitations but which could also be thought of as a birth contraction. Pluto corresponds to a fundamental and unreflective evolutionary drive to survive and persist, whereas Saturn represents the reality principle of material conditions and the experience of the “other” or of duality. Saturn-Pluto periods of time test the hopes and dreams of cultures and societies and asks how those dreams interact with or merely re-enact the past. Where 2018 was very much like the beginning of regular contractions in the birth process, 2019 represents hard laboring towards some new world which wants to be born. Take the time now to gather your supports and your communities and (re-)commit to the flourishing of Earth Community.

Recovering Legacies: Astrology of October 30 – November 5, 2018

***Check out Real Imaginal Daily Divinations on Instagram!***

All Souls Day, Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, Samhain, Ilg?s…these are some of the celebrations around the world marking this week of the thinning of the veil between this world of appearances and the other, more mysterious world of our origin/destination. Such remembrances of the ancestors serve as a reminder of the impermanence of our lives and circumstances, an awareness which is highlighted by the Sun’s annual trip through the regenerative depths of Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 22).

Peacemaking Venus has also amplified the presence of the Scorpionic lately due to her retrograde motion through that sign. Yet she will pierce the veil between Scorpio and Libra this week (Oct. 31), just after making her second opposition to upsetting Uranus (exact Oct. 31). Venus is far more at home in the conciliatory and other-oriented sign of Libra but her extended opposition to Uranus could have her acting a little strangely and less predictably. The consideration of distance, freedom and experimentation within our intimate relations will continue, and some parties may become a little more open to such conversations than during Venus’ time in Scorpio.

Openness to new ideas is aided by the messenger Mercury’s entry into Sagittarius (Oct. 30), which tends to enjoy a broad, expansive view of things. The down side to expansiveness is glossing over or failing to notice important details, and being overly optimistic in assessing situations, including a tendency to exaggerate. Mercury is also in the shadow of its upcoming retrograde, which may correlate to events that are later disputed or result in misunderstanding or perhaps lead us to make overestimations. Patience is advised in navigating any communication snags. Recall that it is perfectly possible for you or anyone else to overlook something important without any malice intended. Beware of assuming the worst and spoiling an otherwise good opportunity…don’t pretend that problems aren’t happening but also let someone clearly demonstrate incompetence, ill will or negligence before assuming that and/or just walking away.

Luckbringing Jupiter’s trine to achy breaky Chiron (exact Nov. 1) suggests that what seems to be just bad luck has another very positive side to it, but that will require a fair amount of patience given the total astrological picture. This particular trine of Jupiter to Chiron is also supportive of using unusual (to you) art-based therapies to honor and release persistent pains related to Venusian areas of life—such as love, belonging, the sweet things of life, income, gifting and receiving, how you like to be received and so on. Music therapies, Playback Theatre, Theatre of the Oppressed, psychodrama, using modeling clay to create representations of brokenness and wholeness, making a mandala, SoulCollage®, Five Rhythms dance or simply cutting loose in an ecstatic dance space or any kind of dance/movement therapy—any intentional art-based exploration, especially those highly unusual or unexpected to you, could facilitate some positive reconfigurations of psyche.

Forge a connection to your ancestors during this special time

The astrology of this week – plus a divination on the topic – suggests the following…

Consider constructing a substantial altar to your ancestors in your home. There you could place offerings of incense, food, flowers, prayer, poetry and/or remembrance. Consider displaying images of your ancestors, whether you knew them or not, and especially those more distant and far flung from you—whether that distance is in imagination or in terms of physical location.

You could make prayers for your ancestors to have a beautiful home in your heart, in this present time. This is not always an easy or joyful task but one which can encourage those of us in the present time to serve the healing and repair of our world. The past continues to live through us today and the quality of our connection with the past is absolutely critical while Saturn conjoins Pluto (2018-2021). Particularly relevant questions for exploration are: Who among your ancestors migrated from their homeland, if anyone did? Where did they come from? Why did they leave their home? How can you offer them comfort and welcome here and now? One idea suggested by the divination is to make a ritual gesture for their healing, one which would also support your own health.

You could also spend time in a prayerful or sacred manner with your ancestral altar or remembrance shrine, letting your heart-mind search for the things you are concerned about, the people you would like to help, any personal soul wounds you would like to heal, relationships you would like to create and relationships you would like to heal, whatever guidance you feel you need, the people who are the most important to you, opportunities you have, decisions you want/need to make…and intentionally offer these up as prayers.

Thar She Blows! : Astrology of October 23 – October 30, 2018

***Check out NEW Real Imaginal Daily Divinations on Instagram!***

I’ve missed writing the weekly astrological outlook for you these past two weeks due to illness. Here’s to better health!

The week begins with the Sun’s entry into the sign of Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 22, 2018). The Sun symbolizes our sense of self or conscious identity and how we want to be seen, and Scorpio beckons us to engage the more murky territory in our psyche. What has been hidden from you? What have you hidden from yourself? Seeing through the murk requires a special kind of vision, a night vision attuned to symbolism and fired by a sacred curiosity. Scorpio digs down for the truth, which can lead into sensitive territory. Thinking symbolically rather than literally can move you beyond fears, taboos and similar restrictions on seeing clearly. Because when we dig down underneath the niceties and surface appearances, it’s important to be open to what is, rather than consumed by desires for or fears of what might be—and hence the need for a true curiosity. Incorporating a sacred dimension to the search for truth can help you not only respect what you find but help you hold the shock of whatever is waiting to be found.

For every planet which enters Scorpio over the next couple of years immediately opposes Uranus, the planet of shock, surprise and awakening (Sun opposite Uranus exact Oct. 23.) There is an electric excitement which can accompany Sun-Uranus, supercharging our courage to try something new or bizarre or risky. When we’re holding Uranus within, it will fuel confidence and feeling secure in our beliefs and our motives, even to the point of excluding the views and feelings of others. That is why Uranus symbolizes breaks with the past and with the prevailing ideas of what is good, true and beautiful—the Uranian impulse must firmly believe its ways are just as good, true and beautiful as the contradictory beliefs of mainstream societies, family traditions or personal karmic patterns. But this is Sun opposite Uranus in the sky, so we might notice Uranus being held by someone or something outside of us. Such as the unexpected and perhaps unpleasant wake up call concerning our self-image, or a challenge to newly won self-confidence, or the call to present a more genuine and perhaps more vulnerable persona.

Chart for Taurus Full Moon 2018

It could all just be extremely irritating, as well, for the Taurus Full Moon on Oct. 24 at 9:46am US/Pacific will be sitting right on top of Uranus. The Full Moon is very energetic all on its own and emotional tensions may be too much to suppress under this influence. Freedom versus loyalty or bonding is highlighted and it will be helpful to know what exactly you want. If you want relationships which give you both, it’s a great time to sort through how to make that happen but don’t expect everyone you’re currently involved with to be in the same exploratory space. Hearing out insecurities—whether from your own psyche or from those who depend or rely on you in some way—will be far more helpful to you than flipping everyone the finger and singing “my way or the highway.” In fact, listening to others’ responses (including if those “others” are your own inner conflicts) can help you in the process of finding your paradoxical way forward. Remember: sacred curiosity. Offer that to yourself under this unsettled and potentially surprising Full Moon.

The Taurus Full Moon also exactly squares the Moon’s nodal axis in the sky making a tense conversation between past and future, karma and dharma, and what enables us versus what hinders us. It looks quite like something long hidden or very surprising will be revealed—like the recent national news coverage in the US of a 14-year ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico which is well on its way to becoming one of the worst offshore ecological disasters in US history. The oil company that owns the rig has tried to conceal the fact so that an estimated 300 to 700 barrels of oil per day have been quietly spewing into the Gulf. For 14 years. That’s between 1.5 and 3.6 million barrels of toxic crude oil. While our own personal revelation may not be on such a scope or scale, indeed this week could witness a substantial change in our sense of security and what we thought was real or true or trustworthy. For some, it will be a new sense of confidence, a release from limiting stories and entanglements and a bold, exciting new relationship to vulnerability. For others, it could be more like finding out someone has hidden something very toxic from you, and perhaps right in your own home.

Too Close or Too Distant: Astrology of October 2 – October 9, 2018

***Check out NEW Real Imaginal Daily Divinations on Instagram!***

Venus carries the big news in the sky this week as she stations retrograde on Oct. 5 at 10° Scorpio and backs up to 25° Libra where she will turn direct on Nov. 16. Though these dates demarcate Venus’ time in retrograde, there is a “shoulder season” of retrogrades known as the shadow period that contains precursors as well as culminations of events which carry the significance of Venus’ initiatory descent into the underworld. The shadow period started on Sept. 3, when Venus first passed 25° Libra. And though she returns to direct motion on Nov. 16, she remains in the shadow of her retrograde until Dec. 16, when she moves through 10° Scorpio. In other words, her influence spans more than three months.

The planet Venus represents many seductions we can spend a lifetime pursuing: money, sex, love, community and the sweeter things of life. Venus in our individual birth charts will describe what we value and how we give and receive in various relationships, as well as our pursuit of pleasure. When Venus in the sky turns retrograde, our particular interests in these areas and qualities of life can intensify or take a sudden turn as hidden or suppressed aspects emerge and demand to be dealt with. The 2018 retrograde could bring up especially tender feelings around issues of fidelity or loyalty, fairness or equality in commitments with others, feelings of or revelations of actual betrayals, our vulnerabilities concerning income and livelihood, and especially any imbalances in exchanges of our time and energy with others. Venus does signify romantic partners, but also holds sway over friendships, work relationships and basically any relationship that is not family, as family is more governed by the Moon.

This Venus retrograde is a good influence for our inner work around questions of intimacy and distance. How close is too close for us (or not close enough)? Why is that our boundary? Is it a good or a functional boundary? How do we negotiate others’ requests to come closer or to back away? It’s more possible at this time to see both the causes and effects of our patterns of negotiating proximity—whether that is physical, emotional or spiritual closeness or distance. It can also be a very tense and perhaps reactive period of time, as Scorpio may lend a tendency to be quick to anger and to defend (as does Venus’ square aspect to aggressive Mars at the front end of this period). The desire to control others could emerge for your inspection—whether you are the one who wants control or the one who is being dominated. Since Venus retrogrades through roughly the same part of the zodiac every eight years, we can look back at the years 2010, 2002 and so on to see what areas or topics of life were activated around October/November for a preview of what 2018’s retrograde could center on.

However, throughout this particular retrograde Venus opposes Uranus, the planet of liberation and unexpected change which suggests breaking free of outgrown habits and perhaps an unpleasant surprise or two in Venusian areas of life. An exciting new relationship—love, business, friendship or income-related—could form but look closely at its prospects for longevity and don’t form an emotional attachment too quickly. The true nature of this relationship could take time to unfold and that doesn’t mean you won’t get something quite lovely in the end—in fact, you may get more than you ever dreamed was possible but only if you let a healthy curiosity and openness lead the way, rather than fear or habits of relating that no longer serve you.

Venus does back up into her home sign of Libra (entering Libra on Nov. 2) which strengthens any intentions we would like to set on this week’s New Moon in Libra at 8:46pm US/Pacific on Oct. 8, particularly in the areas of fairness or equality in our relations (who gives, who receives, and how); how you try to promote harmony (is it a superficial playing nice, or engaging in honest if uncomfortable conversations); your judgmental versus your discerning nature; and your tactics and strategies for getting what you want. Use this Libra New Moon to plant seeds of justice and reciprocity and hold yourself accountable to your own higher standards. It’s okay if your own shortcomings come to light over the retrograde—it will provide a golden opportunity to further develop and honor the beauty of the truth at the center of your being.

The Obscured Comes to Light: Astrology of September 25 – October 1, 2018

***Check out NEW Real Imaginal Daily Divinations on Instagram!***

The equinox is just behind us and our week opens with the vibrant Sun squaring somber Saturn (exact Sept. 25) while underworldly Pluto comes rumbling to a halt (stationing direct Sept. 30). Some of us will be feeling the strain of work or responsibility or just a general sobering of our exuberance as Saturn reminds us of the details we overlooked or the mistakes and problems yet to be resolved. Pluto’s slowing intensifies his presence wherever he is transiting our personal chart—it’s hard to forget the time I once found a half-decomposed mouse in my recycling bin, swimming with Pluto’s regenerative if repulsive lifeforms, just as Pluto was stationing. We may be catching a greater whiff of the stench of needed if unwanted decay in personal, professional and civic spheres and it will be helpful to alternate between disgust and reverence for the whole process. There is a good reason we tend to prefer to steer clear of death and decay, and yet its presence is vital to the continuance of life. How can your repulsion guide you towards life-affirming actions, decisions and affiliations with others? Can you remain humble to the fact that you, too, have a “sinister side?”

With communicative Mercury in the sky approaching their square to regenerative Pluto, our thoughts might quite naturally drift down into the broody depths. And while we may be confronted with important information we have failed to notice until now, there may be little we can do about it, at least in the immediate term. And yet the desire to act will be spurred by the Sun’s trine to energetic Mars (exact Sept. 27) and so we may try to plough ahead with renewed, optimistic intensity. Will this work? Maybe.

Because the planet of harmony Venus is also slowing down to make her retrograde station (Oct. 5) and may also bring some unexpected twists to normally functional social relations. Our attempts to assert ourselves could be ill-received or just go nowhere, as needed connections or supports remain elusive, or require more of us than we expected. On the other hand, your assertion could lead in an unexpected direction and it would be wise to take it slowly and use the incoming Mercury-Pluto influence to gather good intel—listen carefully, peer beneath surfaces, don’t settle for the superficial perspective. Just be careful of bumping into a hornet’s nest or stepping into a yellowjacket hive as you go!  Tender situations are easily provoked and it’s possible that your investigations will reveal more than you ever actually wanted to know. But stick with a low and slow tempo for most of this week—patience can pay greater dividends than charging at windmills or banging your head against a door that’s not ready to open.

Note, too, that the trickster Mercury is now scouting out ahead of the Sun and aspecting Pluto before the Sun does, perhaps bringing you hints, clues and tidbits that will prepare you for the meaning of upcoming Venus retrograde (in Pluto’s sign of Scorpio, also backing into her home sign of Libra) as well as the upcoming square of the Sun to Pluto (exact Oct. 11). Listen in to the end of this week and the beginning of the next for clues about your mid-October plans. Not only could secrets, betrayals and “shady” types of information surface, but word could come from powerful allies, shapeshifting peers or even siblings, as well as powerful inner figures. If you’ve been playing around with malevolent or unwholesome forces without any real understanding of what it is you’re dabbling in—take notice. Some kind of fallout from those associations is imminent. The Aries Full Moon we’ve just experienced (on Sept. 24) will have likely triggered or confirmed these developments.
