The Big Push: Astrology of November 6 – November 12, 2018

***Check out Real Imaginal Daily Divinations on Instagram!***

After a year of traversing deep, dark Scorpio, the royal blood of Jupiter flows into his sparkly home sign of Sagittarius (Nov. 8), strengthening his power and lending favor to his activities. Jupiter’s positive nature is sometimes overemphasized and perhaps this is in keeping with his archetypal nature. And while he can correlate to unqualified success, good fortune, generosities, happiness and freedom, Jupiter’s general character simply describes expansion. Jupiter is the great magnifier, enlarging whatever he touches, hence his reputation for exaggeration, egoic grandiosity, excess, overdoing and overestimating things. Jupiter can therefore just as easily magnify misfortune as grant great benefits. In client work, I have even noticed a correlation between Jupiter square Moon natal aspects and the pattern of orphaned children along the mother line, whether mothers were physically or extremely emotionally absent to their children. That said, we can expect Jupiter’s time in Sagittarius (until Dec. 2019) to usher in some needed hope, optimism and belief in a higher power or higher good with which humanity can cooperate.

The retrograding planet of love and harmony, Venus will make a trine aspect to the god of war, Mars (exact Nov. 9) and if we have understood and started to embody the significance of Mars’ summer retrograde, we could very well receive some fruits of that work. The recent Mars retrograde (Jun. 2018 – Aug. 2018) featured some serious contemplation of our life’s direction, our motivations and our ability to follow through on commitments—as well as clearly discerning what commitments are ours to keep. And if all that was churned up by Mars retrograde has yet to really settle, this week might bring some further insight into making peace with our path through life.

2018 Scorpio New Moon

Along those lines, the Scorpio New Moon on Nov. 7, 2018 at 8:02am US/Pacific looks favorable for affirming a life of greater authenticity and imagination. It seems particularly helpful to invoke its support of your total health and help you sustain your power over the long-term. You might use this lunation to quietly plan a new or refresh an existing self-care routine as it’s an excellent time to assess what supports you and cut out whatever’s not working. You might prefer a more engaged exploration of your community-level support systems, both those you contribute to and those which you tap into. Who has your back and in what ways? Do you need to invest more in various communities of support or are you perhaps giving too much energy to your community-level support systems? Examples of such systems of support include peer groups, affinity groups, professional associations, cultural or community centers, schoolmates and school groups or your extended family.

Scoping further out to a broader view, the planetary herald of impermanence, Uranus returns to the fire sign of Aries (Nov. 6) for a final encore showing in Mars’ sign as we approach the end of a tumultuous 2018. The outer planets do carry significance for individual lives, but can also be interpreted as signifiers of the collective zeitgeist and movements within the collective human psyche. Uranus generally signifies revolution and the brash or confident attitude required to assert a new pattern or order of being, and the 13-year world transit of Uranus square Pluto (2007 – 2020) has ushered in all the instability, uncertainty and power struggles that accompany revolutions. It is ending on the extremely sobering note of Saturn conjunct Pluto (2018 – 2021), a planetary pair which conjoins every 34 – 35 years and can heighten the perceptions of mortality, fear and limitations but which could also be thought of as a birth contraction. Pluto corresponds to a fundamental and unreflective evolutionary drive to survive and persist, whereas Saturn represents the reality principle of material conditions and the experience of the “other” or of duality. Saturn-Pluto periods of time test the hopes and dreams of cultures and societies and asks how those dreams interact with or merely re-enact the past. Where 2018 was very much like the beginning of regular contractions in the birth process, 2019 represents hard laboring towards some new world which wants to be born. Take the time now to gather your supports and your communities and (re-)commit to the flourishing of Earth Community.

Recovering Legacies: Astrology of October 30 – November 5, 2018

***Check out Real Imaginal Daily Divinations on Instagram!***

All Souls Day, Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, Samhain, Ilg?s…these are some of the celebrations around the world marking this week of the thinning of the veil between this world of appearances and the other, more mysterious world of our origin/destination. Such remembrances of the ancestors serve as a reminder of the impermanence of our lives and circumstances, an awareness which is highlighted by the Sun’s annual trip through the regenerative depths of Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 22).

Peacemaking Venus has also amplified the presence of the Scorpionic lately due to her retrograde motion through that sign. Yet she will pierce the veil between Scorpio and Libra this week (Oct. 31), just after making her second opposition to upsetting Uranus (exact Oct. 31). Venus is far more at home in the conciliatory and other-oriented sign of Libra but her extended opposition to Uranus could have her acting a little strangely and less predictably. The consideration of distance, freedom and experimentation within our intimate relations will continue, and some parties may become a little more open to such conversations than during Venus’ time in Scorpio.

Openness to new ideas is aided by the messenger Mercury’s entry into Sagittarius (Oct. 30), which tends to enjoy a broad, expansive view of things. The down side to expansiveness is glossing over or failing to notice important details, and being overly optimistic in assessing situations, including a tendency to exaggerate. Mercury is also in the shadow of its upcoming retrograde, which may correlate to events that are later disputed or result in misunderstanding or perhaps lead us to make overestimations. Patience is advised in navigating any communication snags. Recall that it is perfectly possible for you or anyone else to overlook something important without any malice intended. Beware of assuming the worst and spoiling an otherwise good opportunity…don’t pretend that problems aren’t happening but also let someone clearly demonstrate incompetence, ill will or negligence before assuming that and/or just walking away.

Luckbringing Jupiter’s trine to achy breaky Chiron (exact Nov. 1) suggests that what seems to be just bad luck has another very positive side to it, but that will require a fair amount of patience given the total astrological picture. This particular trine of Jupiter to Chiron is also supportive of using unusual (to you) art-based therapies to honor and release persistent pains related to Venusian areas of life—such as love, belonging, the sweet things of life, income, gifting and receiving, how you like to be received and so on. Music therapies, Playback Theatre, Theatre of the Oppressed, psychodrama, using modeling clay to create representations of brokenness and wholeness, making a mandala, SoulCollage®, Five Rhythms dance or simply cutting loose in an ecstatic dance space or any kind of dance/movement therapy—any intentional art-based exploration, especially those highly unusual or unexpected to you, could facilitate some positive reconfigurations of psyche.

Forge a connection to your ancestors during this special time

The astrology of this week – plus a divination on the topic – suggests the following…

Consider constructing a substantial altar to your ancestors in your home. There you could place offerings of incense, food, flowers, prayer, poetry and/or remembrance. Consider displaying images of your ancestors, whether you knew them or not, and especially those more distant and far flung from you—whether that distance is in imagination or in terms of physical location.

You could make prayers for your ancestors to have a beautiful home in your heart, in this present time. This is not always an easy or joyful task but one which can encourage those of us in the present time to serve the healing and repair of our world. The past continues to live through us today and the quality of our connection with the past is absolutely critical while Saturn conjoins Pluto (2018-2021). Particularly relevant questions for exploration are: Who among your ancestors migrated from their homeland, if anyone did? Where did they come from? Why did they leave their home? How can you offer them comfort and welcome here and now? One idea suggested by the divination is to make a ritual gesture for their healing, one which would also support your own health.

You could also spend time in a prayerful or sacred manner with your ancestral altar or remembrance shrine, letting your heart-mind search for the things you are concerned about, the people you would like to help, any personal soul wounds you would like to heal, relationships you would like to create and relationships you would like to heal, whatever guidance you feel you need, the people who are the most important to you, opportunities you have, decisions you want/need to make…and intentionally offer these up as prayers.

Thar She Blows! : Astrology of October 23 – October 30, 2018

***Check out NEW Real Imaginal Daily Divinations on Instagram!***

I’ve missed writing the weekly astrological outlook for you these past two weeks due to illness. Here’s to better health!

The week begins with the Sun’s entry into the sign of Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 22, 2018). The Sun symbolizes our sense of self or conscious identity and how we want to be seen, and Scorpio beckons us to engage the more murky territory in our psyche. What has been hidden from you? What have you hidden from yourself? Seeing through the murk requires a special kind of vision, a night vision attuned to symbolism and fired by a sacred curiosity. Scorpio digs down for the truth, which can lead into sensitive territory. Thinking symbolically rather than literally can move you beyond fears, taboos and similar restrictions on seeing clearly. Because when we dig down underneath the niceties and surface appearances, it’s important to be open to what is, rather than consumed by desires for or fears of what might be—and hence the need for a true curiosity. Incorporating a sacred dimension to the search for truth can help you not only respect what you find but help you hold the shock of whatever is waiting to be found.

For every planet which enters Scorpio over the next couple of years immediately opposes Uranus, the planet of shock, surprise and awakening (Sun opposite Uranus exact Oct. 23.) There is an electric excitement which can accompany Sun-Uranus, supercharging our courage to try something new or bizarre or risky. When we’re holding Uranus within, it will fuel confidence and feeling secure in our beliefs and our motives, even to the point of excluding the views and feelings of others. That is why Uranus symbolizes breaks with the past and with the prevailing ideas of what is good, true and beautiful—the Uranian impulse must firmly believe its ways are just as good, true and beautiful as the contradictory beliefs of mainstream societies, family traditions or personal karmic patterns. But this is Sun opposite Uranus in the sky, so we might notice Uranus being held by someone or something outside of us. Such as the unexpected and perhaps unpleasant wake up call concerning our self-image, or a challenge to newly won self-confidence, or the call to present a more genuine and perhaps more vulnerable persona.

Chart for Taurus Full Moon 2018

It could all just be extremely irritating, as well, for the Taurus Full Moon on Oct. 24 at 9:46am US/Pacific will be sitting right on top of Uranus. The Full Moon is very energetic all on its own and emotional tensions may be too much to suppress under this influence. Freedom versus loyalty or bonding is highlighted and it will be helpful to know what exactly you want. If you want relationships which give you both, it’s a great time to sort through how to make that happen but don’t expect everyone you’re currently involved with to be in the same exploratory space. Hearing out insecurities—whether from your own psyche or from those who depend or rely on you in some way—will be far more helpful to you than flipping everyone the finger and singing “my way or the highway.” In fact, listening to others’ responses (including if those “others” are your own inner conflicts) can help you in the process of finding your paradoxical way forward. Remember: sacred curiosity. Offer that to yourself under this unsettled and potentially surprising Full Moon.

The Taurus Full Moon also exactly squares the Moon’s nodal axis in the sky making a tense conversation between past and future, karma and dharma, and what enables us versus what hinders us. It looks quite like something long hidden or very surprising will be revealed—like the recent national news coverage in the US of a 14-year ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico which is well on its way to becoming one of the worst offshore ecological disasters in US history. The oil company that owns the rig has tried to conceal the fact so that an estimated 300 to 700 barrels of oil per day have been quietly spewing into the Gulf. For 14 years. That’s between 1.5 and 3.6 million barrels of toxic crude oil. While our own personal revelation may not be on such a scope or scale, indeed this week could witness a substantial change in our sense of security and what we thought was real or true or trustworthy. For some, it will be a new sense of confidence, a release from limiting stories and entanglements and a bold, exciting new relationship to vulnerability. For others, it could be more like finding out someone has hidden something very toxic from you, and perhaps right in your own home.

Too Close or Too Distant: Astrology of October 2 – October 9, 2018

***Check out NEW Real Imaginal Daily Divinations on Instagram!***

Venus carries the big news in the sky this week as she stations retrograde on Oct. 5 at 10° Scorpio and backs up to 25° Libra where she will turn direct on Nov. 16. Though these dates demarcate Venus’ time in retrograde, there is a “shoulder season” of retrogrades known as the shadow period that contains precursors as well as culminations of events which carry the significance of Venus’ initiatory descent into the underworld. The shadow period started on Sept. 3, when Venus first passed 25° Libra. And though she returns to direct motion on Nov. 16, she remains in the shadow of her retrograde until Dec. 16, when she moves through 10° Scorpio. In other words, her influence spans more than three months.

The planet Venus represents many seductions we can spend a lifetime pursuing: money, sex, love, community and the sweeter things of life. Venus in our individual birth charts will describe what we value and how we give and receive in various relationships, as well as our pursuit of pleasure. When Venus in the sky turns retrograde, our particular interests in these areas and qualities of life can intensify or take a sudden turn as hidden or suppressed aspects emerge and demand to be dealt with. The 2018 retrograde could bring up especially tender feelings around issues of fidelity or loyalty, fairness or equality in commitments with others, feelings of or revelations of actual betrayals, our vulnerabilities concerning income and livelihood, and especially any imbalances in exchanges of our time and energy with others. Venus does signify romantic partners, but also holds sway over friendships, work relationships and basically any relationship that is not family, as family is more governed by the Moon.

Chart for Libra New Moon 2018
Chart for 2018 Libra New Moon

This Venus retrograde is a good influence for our inner work around questions of intimacy and distance. How close is too close for us (or not close enough)? Why is that our boundary? Is it a good or a functional boundary? How do we negotiate others’ requests to come closer or to back away? It’s more possible at this time to see both the causes and effects of our patterns of negotiating proximity—whether that is physical, emotional or spiritual closeness or distance. It can also be a very tense and perhaps reactive period of time, as Scorpio may lend a tendency to be quick to anger and to defend (as does Venus’ square aspect to aggressive Mars at the front end of this period). The desire to control others could emerge for your inspection—whether you are the one who wants control or the one who is being dominated. Since Venus retrogrades through roughly the same part of the zodiac every eight years, we can look back at the years 2010, 2002 and so on to see what areas or topics of life were activated around October/November for a preview of what 2018’s retrograde could center on.

However, throughout this particular retrograde Venus opposes Uranus, the planet of liberation and unexpected change which suggests breaking free of outgrown habits and perhaps an unpleasant surprise or two in Venusian areas of life. An exciting new relationship—love, business, friendship or income-related—could form but look closely at its prospects for longevity and don’t form an emotional attachment too quickly. The true nature of this relationship could take time to unfold and that doesn’t mean you won’t get something quite lovely in the end—in fact, you may get more than you ever dreamed was possible but only if you let a healthy curiosity and openness lead the way, rather than fear or habits of relating that no longer serve you.

Venus does back up into her home sign of Libra (entering Libra on Nov. 2) which strengthens any intentions we would like to set on this week’s New Moon in Libra at 8:46pm US/Pacific on Oct. 8, particularly in the areas of fairness or equality in our relations (who gives, who receives, and how); how you try to promote harmony (is it a superficial playing nice, or engaging in honest if uncomfortable conversations); your judgmental versus your discerning nature; and your tactics and strategies for getting what you want. Use this Libra New Moon to plant seeds of justice and reciprocity and hold yourself accountable to your own higher standards. It’s okay if your own shortcomings come to light over the retrograde—it will provide a golden opportunity to further develop and honor the beauty of the truth at the center of your being.

The Obscured Comes to Light: Astrology of September 25 – October 1, 2018

***Check out NEW Real Imaginal Daily Divinations on Instagram!***

The equinox is just behind us and our week opens with the vibrant Sun squaring somber Saturn (exact Sept. 25) while underworldly Pluto comes rumbling to a halt (stationing direct Sept. 30). Some of us will be feeling the strain of work or responsibility or just a general sobering of our exuberance as Saturn reminds us of the details we overlooked or the mistakes and problems yet to be resolved. Pluto’s slowing intensifies his presence wherever he is transiting our personal chart—it’s hard to forget the time I once found a half-decomposed mouse in my recycling bin, swimming with Pluto’s regenerative if repulsive lifeforms, just as Pluto was stationing. We may be catching a greater whiff of the stench of needed if unwanted decay in personal, professional and civic spheres and it will be helpful to alternate between disgust and reverence for the whole process. There is a good reason we tend to prefer to steer clear of death and decay, and yet its presence is vital to the continuance of life. How can your repulsion guide you towards life-affirming actions, decisions and affiliations with others? Can you remain humble to the fact that you, too, have a “sinister side?”

With communicative Mercury in the sky approaching their square to regenerative Pluto, our thoughts might quite naturally drift down into the broody depths. And while we may be confronted with important information we have failed to notice until now, there may be little we can do about it, at least in the immediate term. And yet the desire to act will be spurred by the Sun’s trine to energetic Mars (exact Sept. 27) and so we may try to plough ahead with renewed, optimistic intensity. Will this work? Maybe.

Because the planet of harmony Venus is also slowing down to make her retrograde station (Oct. 5) and may also bring some unexpected twists to normally functional social relations. Our attempts to assert ourselves could be ill-received or just go nowhere, as needed connections or supports remain elusive, or require more of us than we expected. On the other hand, your assertion could lead in an unexpected direction and it would be wise to take it slowly and use the incoming Mercury-Pluto influence to gather good intel—listen carefully, peer beneath surfaces, don’t settle for the superficial perspective. Just be careful of bumping into a hornet’s nest or stepping into a yellowjacket hive as you go!  Tender situations are easily provoked and it’s possible that your investigations will reveal more than you ever actually wanted to know. But stick with a low and slow tempo for most of this week—patience can pay greater dividends than charging at windmills or banging your head against a door that’s not ready to open.

Note, too, that the trickster Mercury is now scouting out ahead of the Sun and aspecting Pluto before the Sun does, perhaps bringing you hints, clues and tidbits that will prepare you for the meaning of upcoming Venus retrograde (in Pluto’s sign of Scorpio, also backing into her home sign of Libra) as well as the upcoming square of the Sun to Pluto (exact Oct. 11). Listen in to the end of this week and the beginning of the next for clues about your mid-October plans. Not only could secrets, betrayals and “shady” types of information surface, but word could come from powerful allies, shapeshifting peers or even siblings, as well as powerful inner figures. If you’ve been playing around with malevolent or unwholesome forces without any real understanding of what it is you’re dabbling in—take notice. Some kind of fallout from those associations is imminent. The Aries Full Moon we’ve just experienced (on Sept. 24) will have likely triggered or confirmed these developments.

Putting the “I” in “we”: Astrology of September 18 – September 24, 2018

***Check out NEW Real Imaginal Daily Divinations on Instagram!***

The Aries Full Moon on Sept. 24 at 7:52pm US/Pacific issues a frank declaration: cut the crap. This Full Moon forms a no-nonsense exact T-square with stern Saturn that looks like business. Whereas Saturn’s influence may inhibit expression, the continued dynamism of fiery Mars squaring surprising Uranus and also squaring relational Venus is stirring things up a little more than usual. We may receive or give a harsh or critical appraisal that may not be completely off base, though any long-repressed unspoken feelings could cloud our perception. It will not be so easy to hide your mistakes or your true feelings—your cover may be blown!

Making the most of the few days leading up to this Full Moon by internally acknowledging how you feel and what you believe could defuse arguments so that stern but stable Saturn’s influence can bring in some calm, calculated communication. It will also be helpful to consider opposing perspectives and to make a sincere effort to represent other people’s beliefs, actions and (apparent) motivations truthfully. Fidelity to other perspectives will steer you clear of accusations and entanglement in unnecessary intrigues, and could also shed new light on an old or troublesome issue through open dialogue.

2018 Aries Full Moon

Chatty Mercury makes their superior conjunction to the Sun in discreet Virgo (exact. Sep. 20), but Mercury is moving fast at this point in their cycle, leaping into Libra on Sep. 21 and immediately opposing the sensitive centaur, Chiron in Aries. You may be challenged to understand what holds you back from taking charge, or you may get a good look at failures to consider your impact on others. This aspect generally speaks to the tug of war between the individual self (Aries) and the relational self (Libra) and it may be necessary to verbalize boundaries as well as point out where your boundaries have been crossed. Experiment with placing yourself first as a way of taking responsibility for your actions and your words. Putting yourself in the driver’s seat here isn’t so much about running over other people as it is about becoming the individual being that is necessary to create real relationship.

We may find ourselves hashing it out particularly with workmates, siblings or peers and again, it’s necessary to take responsibility for our own decisions by daring to be an individual self with thoughts, feelings and experiences. Any tendency to place undue responsibility on others for what you say, do or feel will likely come right back at you with a “WRONG ANSWER” written all over it. Of course, we’re all tied together in a network of mutuality, but the spotlight is now on our capacity to show up for ourselves in a way that acknowledges our real duties, responsibilities and obligations.

Looking for the Center: Astrology of September 11 – September 18, 2018

***Check out NEW Real Imaginal Daily Divinations on Instagram!***

The story in the sky this week centers on sweet Venus’ opposition to erratic Uranus (exact Sept. 12), which is sharply punctuated by a T-square formation with the swordsman himself, Mars. We can expect the beginnings (or a deepening) of a re-organization in our social sphere which may impact our friendships, our sources of income, our intimate partnerships and our ideas about how to love and be loved. While the period of Sept. 7 through Sept. 16 may produce a number of shocks or major turns, it is reasonable to expect various consequences and additional wrinkles to the plot to roll into the Venus retrograde this fall. (See bottom for key dates of the 2018 Venus retrograde.)

Since aesthetically attuned Venus makes her retrogrades in a symmetrical fashion, retrograding through the same part of the zodiac every eight years, it is useful to reflect on what was going on for you in fall 2010 in the sphere of love, friendships, money and sex. You might also reflect on what was happening for you around the topic(s) of the house(s) she was retrograding through in your personal chart as these areas of life will similarly be stimulated during the present retrograde. You can also reach back in memory to previous retrogrades for hints and suggestions of what may unfurl this fall, such as 2002, 1994, 1986 and so on. This particular retrograde is notable for its overlap with the Mars retrograde which is winding down (Mars leaves the shadow of his retrograde on Nov. 12) and its opposition to the revolutionary impulses of Uranus. There could be alternating periods of confusion and clarity around key relationships in your life which have anchored your identity up to this point. Re-orienting to a different social self may be unpleasant at times but it will ultimately be liberating, as you tune into the demands of Saturn in Capricorn, who wants solid life support structures. Fortunately, stabilizing Saturn’s harmonious trine aspect to earthquaking Uranus offers a bit of support for a more life-affirming movement.

The planet of mind, Mercury makes their opposition to illogical Neptune (exact Sep. 13), which can make clear thinking a bit challenging. As suggested for last week’s New Moon in discerning Virgo, altering one’s consciousness in various ways could catalyze access to greater spiritual knowledge, particularly as Mercury applies to their trine with the penetrating depths of Pluto (exact Sep. 15). It is not necessary to take powerful mind-altering substances, particularly since the astro-weather already heightens the potential for reaching into more transcendent or inscendent realms of consciousness. In fact, centering practices such as meditation, contemplative practice and mantras as well as yoga asana can be much more useful in bringing some focus to what could otherwise be a blurry or indistinct state of mind. Exploring more artistic and poetic modes of expression is also supported, as Pluto’s influence brings even more of the underworld of the unconscious to the surface. However, this could also translate into messy conversations with a great deal of misunderstanding and suspicion or paranoia mixed in! Slow down and take it easy if you are in a contentious situation as the air may clear of its own accord by the end of the week.

Which Way Is Up?: Astrology of September 4 – September 10, 2018

As many of us orient to all the changes, delays, frustrations or re-directions the outgoing Mars retrograde period has brought in (beginning in early May/ mid-June), the planet of harmony, Venus begins to enter her slightly overlapping retrograde period, entering the shadow of the path of her retrograde at 25° Libra (Sept. 3) and squaring the planet of discord Mars (exact Sept. 8). They are both making a hard aspect to trickster Uranus, alerting us to be on the lookout for mischief in our intimate, social and work environments. Tensions that have been hidden may suddenly spring into the light, or ongoing problems may finally boil over. Patience is running short and this configuration can indicate a desire to completely overhaul existing agreements and arrangements.

Meanwhile, Saturn is moving at his slowest as he prepares to return to direct motion through the zodiac on Sept. 6 at 2° Capricorn. Waves of karma are spinning some of us in great circles, while others of us take bold and decisive steps to break free of ancient restrictions, however problematic the jailbreak may be. Sometimes falling two steps backwards will provide an impetus to take a great leap forward—even if that setback is annoying or baffling at the time. For everyone invested in their healing path to psychospiritual wholeness: we never get rid of our wounding and our karmic tendencies. As these are attended to with care and tenderness, they may become more integrated and less overwhelming, but they’re still there. The path towards wholeness is more of a spiral, so that the next time we encounter a particular wound, we get a different viewpoint of it from along the spiral, but the wound is not simply gone. With each encounter comes the chance to gather more wisdom about ourselves and the human condition.

Which brings us to the Virgo New Moon at 11:01am US/Pacific on Sept. 9, 2018. This New Moon offers a powerful conversation around health and wellness, whether psychological, spiritual, physical or emotional, in large part due to its close opposition aspect with the planet of healing, Neptune in Pisces. Virgo can be health obsessed and perhaps that’s because of the desire to never be in the position of needing help (overly independent). Virgo’s opposite, Pisces, can be too vulnerable to external influences and therefore constantly in need of help (overly dependent). Both Virgo and Pisces are service-oriented, perhaps out of recognition of vulnerability both large (Pisces) and small (Virgo) and this New Moon could represent a melting of old defenses that are no longer needed—or a complete meltdown of epic proportions. The Mars Retrograde of the past few months has highlighted for a great many people any incongruity between their ambitions and their capacities, especially physical limitations. If we’ve listened to the signals to slow down, we are in a better position to rearrange our strategies for self-care. If we’ve ignored those signs…this may represent a breakdown point.

Regardless of your current trajectory, Virgo’s potent powers of discernment can be challenged by such a strong aspect from Neptune, who can create confusion and disorientation. But if we take time to alter our ordinary ego consciousness and enter into other, more Neptunian ways of knowing, we may receive some vital information on: the state of the sacred union of the active and receptive principles within ourselves; how to fortify our boundaries, whether energetic or more material; where or how we should practice more vulnerability; how to open our hearts to ourselves; the nature of freedom and attachment in relationship. Altering our consciousness could look like taking inner journeys with the spirits of plants, including non-entheogenic plants who reach out to us as allies, such as ocotillo, motherwort, cornsilk, black cohosh, hydrangea, devil’s club, hawthorn, and so on.

Deep Review of Future Plans: Astrology of August 28 – September 3, 2018

We have finally reached Mars’ turning point in the 2018 retrograde period in which the red planet of desire, rashness and action slowly begins to move forward in the zodiac again (Aug. 27), pausing to carefully consider his next move at the 28th degree of Capricorn. We may have likewise found ourselves in deep review and reconsideration of our plans for action and where we feel our momentum gaining ground and also where we find ourselves faltering. Mars in the sign of Capricorn responds well to planning and organization, but with Mars continuing to square volatile and unpredictable Uranus, you would do well to consider planning things a little differently than usual. Old security blankets may become nooses to hang ourselves in if we don’t open ourselves to new forms of organization, new ways of planning and generally allowing for our goals to be responsive to other environmental factors in our lives. Locking in on a target may be necessary, but the path getting there won’t look the same as it has before.

Because you have changed. Or something has otherwise shifted or made itself available to you, arisen for inspection, remediation and integration during this Mars retrograde period (since June 26, though possibly since May 10). The Sun’s presence in Virgo (through Sep. 23) can help you to pierce your own illusions by seeing the gritty details you might want to overlook or which are just not easily seen. Take advantage of this week to take a realistic stock of the foundations for your projects, goals and aspirations prior to next week’s Virgo New Moon which closely opposes visionary Neptune. Being honest with yourself, you might inquire as follows: what has your body told you over the past few months about your current pace of life? Too fast? Too slow? Too much? Not enough? Are your timelines too short? Are there other factors playing into your aspirations which are simply out of your control, but which you really need to respect? Are you able to trust that some larger movements which are forcing your hand are in fact carrying you—mysteriously—towards your goal? What other facts and information do you need to gather in order to make better decisions about the direction of your (finite) life energy? It could be that you actually have all the information you need…but you need to be willing to let it tell you a more truthful story than the one you have been telling yourself.

The planet Mars as seen from space

Saturn is slowing down in order to make his direct station (Sep. 6), which can bring in some extra pressure around deadlines, decisions and responsibilities for a couple of weeks. Saturn wants us to get off on good footing, and leave behind whatever childishness will undermine our progress and our overall health. Saturn wants us to succeed and is not shy about removing obstacles—as well as placing them in particularly sensitive areas which force us to look more closely and consider more carefully. Since this station of taskmaster Saturn makes a tight square aspect with the rogue comet Chiron, who has recently entered Aries, we may be confronting who we believe to be the author of our lives. (Note: who we BELIEVE to be the author of or authority in our lives.) We may be facing off with issues of sovereignty and leadership within our own lives, and having challenging interactions around who gets the final word, or who plays “the boss.”

This could very well be an internal conversation, as new patterns or habits try to emerge at the same time as older habits try to re-assert themselves. Being deeply loving with those older habits—however frustrating they may be—is critical to effectively releasing their hold over you. You may have to be a little more assertive with external figures though don’t waste much time with fighting. If power truly is “the ability to cause or prevent change which arises from the fact of communion,” recognize the parts of the relationship you are feeding. Alter your stance, gather allies to help you as needed and use your relatedness to an advantage. It may be possible to establish new understandings, new lines of communication, new ways of achieving things together and establish much more enduring and rewarding bonds.

Grounding Into Changes: Astrology of August 21 – August 27, 2018

These waning days of August means the Sun enters Virgo (Aug. 22) and is almost immediately opposed by the Moon when they both reach 3° Virgo/Pisces, respectively. The entire planet is within a long-term general potential to effect CHANGE and no matter how fixed sign (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) or Saturnian you may feel in wanting to resist or deny change its rightful and prominent place—cosmic forces are enabling us to make some extraordinary changes to our karmic patterns, both individually and collectively. This particular Full Moon in Pisces on August 26, 2018 at 4:56am US/Pacific points towards grounding into effective means of upending your whole life. Well, maybe not your WHOLE life, but for some of us, it will indeed involve the whole enchilada.

The Pisces Full Moon invites us into divine connection, especially through attention to the body, through which we can summon the courage—and the vulnerability—to conquer the basest survival fears which hold us prisoner. A key to this process is agreeing to commit only to what is ours to do. Locating our true responsibilities to self and to other and seeing the way to let go of all the accumulations of pride or co-dependence or martyrdom or whatever is burdening us with too great a weight to carry. Action-oriented Mars will resume direct motion beginning the next day (Aug. 27) and for this entire week will function more like incendiary Pluto, as it grinds to a halt in the sky before moving forward. For some, a sudden change of heart could materialize, while for others a sudden change of course which has happened some time since June 27 will solidify under the guidance of new directions, new courses you are now free to set. Be vigilant against falling back into old survival patterns that you have outgrown; you are free to choose a different path now, even if it takes time to become accustomed to a brand new pair of legs! Like a baby, it can take time—and some falling down—to learn to walk in new ways.

Pisces Full Moon 2018

The planet of harmony, balance and friendship, Venus squares our dark lord of the underworld, Pluto (exact Aug. 26) during the Full Moon, which could put the finishing touches on a romantic or more platonic strife. Whether it signals a break up or the chance to make up, emotions will be riding extra high with this Full Moon and it is wise to take the space you need in order to make honest connections with others. Hiding your vulnerability with emotionally manipulative or evasive tactics is a waste of this influence, which could instead help us to develop greater empathy for ourselves and for others. Venus’ square to Pluto also supports a continued meditation on the nature of our generosity towards others, which was indicated by the previous New Moon in Leo. In fact, this Full Moon may yield some greater insight into if not some resolutions around that inquiry. Especially for those who tend to offer their most tender, sensitive parts up to those who do not know how to properly care for them, harness the discernment within this Full Moon to your best interests, which includes self-protection.

You might try a lovingkindness meditation this week to help ease pain or any undue fear surrounding transitions. For example, you could sit in a quiet place with your feet on the floor, or in a meditative posture, eyes closed or half closed and allow yourself to concentrate on your breath for a few minutes. This preliminary practice can help generate inner quiet and calm before bringing to mind someone you love or care for, and wishing with your whole heart that they know love, kindness, happiness and joy—wishing with your whole heart that they be free from suffering and the causes of suffering—wishing with your whole heart that they be happy, safe and free. You could then move to picturing those who you find difficult or challenging; or a particular situation which is troubling; or a particular part of you which you find difficult or challenging; or even the entire world of 7.6 billion people. Be specific and concrete, detailed in what you bring forth to offer lovingkindness to, and you may find that your own heart lightens considerably in the process.
