Aquarius New Moon: Talk is cheap

We’ve just passed this year’s New Moon in Aquarius, which together with war god Mars squaring compulsive Pluto and also conjoining defiant Uranus, could have brought a flaring forth of self-righteousness. And not that we wouldn’t have a very important point to make, it’s just that…talk is cheap. Aquarius can tune us into our ideals, but can also tune us out to the fact that we’re actually a part of the world we wish to improve. We’re all participating in the mess, for better AND for worse. It’s always a work in progress. That’s not an excuse to avoid confronting social ills—whether those are up close or farther away from us—but it’s worthwhile to take a second look at tactics if championing our ideals and beliefs requires stomping other people down. Exchanging one set of victims for another set of perpetrators keeps us all spinning in never-ending circles of trauma.

Sun sextile Jupiter: Looking for the Good

Fresh from his coniunctio with the Moon, that great integrator of energies the Sun completes a soothing sextile to expansive Jupiter (exact Feb. 7). This aspect lends a helping hand to assimilating whatever emerged from the Feb. 4 meeting of the unconscious—Moon—with the conscious sense of self—Sun. Sun sextile Jupiter looks for the good in people and situations, and if allied to the strong drive of Mars described above, can provide support for our creative projects and endeavors. It’s not only supportive for smoothing out the rough edges, but imagining a different way forward.

Mercury sextile Mars-Uranus: Many paths

Because the mischief maker and chief communicator Mercury is making a supportive sextile with Mars (exact Feb. 7) and Uranus (exact Feb. 9)! We might take stock of our prospects and plans for the next couple of months and inventory our goals in search of flexibility. How many paths could we take to reach our destinations? It’s a good idea to do that while the inspiration is more accessible and before Mercury hits Pisces (Feb. 10) where they will make a retrograde (Mar. 15 – 28) that could challenge our attempts at linear thinking.

Moon in Aries: Wakey, wakey!

The Moon is passing through fiery Aries (Feb. 8 – 10) and conjoining Mars and Uranus just as Mercury makes their sextile, bringing even more attention to this spicy final conjunction of Mars and Uranus in Aries, where they won’t conjoin again until Jan. 2096. This may provide a bit of a trigger for significant events related to: asserting one’s will as never before; our creative pursuits; fighting in the streets (however we may enact that metaphor, literally or not); disentangling ourselves from outdated power structures and institutions; and recognizing that originality in art is non-existent but authenticity is what will strike the motherlode.

Mercury in Pisces: We protect what we love

And this week we enter a long stretch of watery Piscean mind as Mercury enters Pisces on Feb. 10 and doesn’t leave Pisces until Apr. 16 after completing their upcoming retrograde. This bodes well for summoning the Muse, the genius, the daimon—that odd inner self who is at once “ours” and yet not ours. We could take advantage of this by going out early mornings in search of beauty and making some offering to what draws us to it. The daffodil or the crocus flower, the undying rosemary bush or the bird in the bower. Rise before the sun breaks fully into day and give voice to gratitude, to appreciation and connect with the beauty that reaches out to you, asking for your attention. Notice what—if anything—may happen in response…in the inner world or the outer world. Who awakens when you praise the Sacred Other for its own sake?

The Irish poet John O’Donohue offers us the following perspective on the role of beauty in our times:

“As we are speaking…there are individuals holding out on frontlines, holding the humane tissue alive in areas of ultimate barbarity, where things are visible that the human eye should never see. And they’re able to sustain it because there is, in them, some kind of sense of beauty that knows the horizon that we are really called to in some way. I love Pascal’s phrase, that you should always keep something beautiful in your mind. And…if you can keep some kind of little contour that you can glimpse sideways at, now and again, you can endure great bleakness.”

Naming the Dragon: Astrology of July 3 – July 9, 2018

While the first week of July features a pleasant grand trine between the Sun in Cancer, Jupiter in Scorpio and Neptune in Pisces (exact July 5 – 8), the Mercury opposition to Mars (exact July 5) promises to leave a significant stamp for many of us. Sun-Jupiter-Neptune is less emphatic and a bit more passive than the very energetic duo of Mercury-Mars, which signifies a quickening of the mind and communications, a sense of urgency around communicating and can occasion the verbal spar or argument. We may all find ourselves short-tempered and unwilling to listen carefully in the rush to make our own point heard and understood. It is not the most favorable aspect for traveling, as it indicates interruptions, potential accidents, missed connections or fighting to reach your destination. If you have to travel, do what you can to avoid being in a rush, practice defensive driving and keep your cell phone out of reach when behind the wheel. The latter goes without saying, but it’s doubly true under these skies—concentrate on what you’re doing because the unexpected could leap out in front of you, leaving little time to react.

Beyond travel concerns, we may experience some separations or beginnings of separations during Mercury’s opposition to Mars. The 180° angle of the opposition suggests one-to-one relationships, but can also point to our own inner patterns of attachment to and relationship with others, as well as signifying projects or endeavors which take up significant amounts of time or life energy. It is a wonderful energetic potential to harness to our attempts to change outgrown ways of relating, particularly if we have already invested some efforts and consciousness-building in that area. This aspect will also highlight areas where we may be over-committed or need to hone in on the most important priorities. Mars recently entered retrograde motion on June 26 which gives us all a chance to review and appraise the role of pursuit and being pursued, aggression, boundary protection, personal will, goal orientation and deadlines, and other Mars-related experiences, challenges and opportunities in our lives. This week may present the challenge of truly heeding and respecting the significance of conflicts in one’s life—the urgent need for a relationship or a way of relating to end or change forever, for example—and avoiding the temptation to hang on to a fantasy or some old agreement that no longer supports you and/or others.

Chiron stations retrograde on July 4 as well, in the Mars-ruled sign of Aries, suggesting that we take time to be as thorough as possible in detailing the reasons why we need to change or end a relationship, project or way of being. This can offer a chance to recover one’s willpower and assertion from patterns of being overly dominating or overly submissive, or from some younger version of ourselves who is trapped in an old story and recreating the same conflict again and again in our lives. The cosmos is conspiring to free you from such traps, and it will take some courage and presence of mind and heart to step in a direction which will not only liberate you but others around you. Pull in the grand water trine of Sun-Jupiter-Neptune to envision a new way and a better way for you to step into your responsibilities. What pace of life do you long for? What are you doing to support or complicate that pace or rhythm? What kind of people do you want to be around? Are those who you are intimate with living their own ideals or story of the good, or is something incongruent? It may be difficult to have a healing conversation around differences between ideals and real deeds without being as honest as humanly possible. We might consider author Carol S. Pearson’s perspective: “It is not just honesty…that is important, but the energy that surrounds it.  If honesty comes out of a desire to cut down, it can be very destructive.  However, enveloped in love, it has quite a different effect.  The hero’s goal is not to slay, but to name the dragon—to reinstate community through communication.”

Therefore, don’t forget that asking others to be honest implies asking yourself to be as honest as possible, too. A genuine calling others to account necessarily involves opening oneself up to criticism, and taking responsibility for one’s own role in an equation. It’s possible to use conflict as a precious opportunity to not only release ourselves from the past, but to invite in a future in which you and your community can thrive.

Shedding Skins: Astrology of Feb. 27 – Mar. 5, 2018

This last week of February 2018 brings a little fiery kick to an otherwise emotional or even weepy Piscean mood, as Mercury squares Mars and sextiles Pluto (exact Feb. 28), resulting in plans and communications appearing to work at cross purposes. For example, one person’s romantic dreams may be upset by another’s adventuresome spirit, and it may be difficult to bridge the two differing impulses. The different parties involved may be very clear about what they each are doing—but it will be a tricky matter trying to align those various plans!

The high emotional tide of the Full Moon in Virgo, which is exact at 4:51pm US/Pacific on March 1, is unlikely to bring calm or clarity to any such conflicts concerning direction, plans of action or the like. Virgo is very particular about its likes and dislikes, and with Neptune in a close conjunction with the Pisces Sun, sorting through disillusionment or unattainable ideals or dreams could be a theme for many under this Full Moon. Uranus makes an exact semisquare (45° angle) to the Sun, and an exact sesquisquare (135° angle) to the Moon, bringing in an erratic or unexpected quality. Uranus is often upsetting as a herald of the trickster, who delights in upending our expectations. Can you adjust? What—realistically—will that adjustment entail?

Virgo Full Moon 2018

On another level, the Virgo Full Moon of March 1, 2018 could offer up spiritual breakthrough, freeing your voice or your mind from old habits of expression. The devil will be in the details of Virgo’s discerning ways, and getting beyond cheap and feel-good dualities—such as unreflective notions of right or wrong, good or bad, pleasurable or painful—will be necessary to fully reap the harvest. Not everything worth having comes easily, but neither is pain and suffering a good indicator of the worthiness of one’s cause, ideals or pursuits. The nature of the full moon is to bring one’s emotional and inherited or instinctual self into greater contact with the conscious sense of a separate self, that part of us which says, “I am.” Neptune’s influence on this particular full moon demands self-reflection, and with such a tool, we have a chance to pierce a veil of unconsciousness. Under a full moon, it is rather common to experience the instinctual self (Moon) engulfing or overwhelming the “I am” (Sun), but it’s worth harnessing an intention to play an active role in coming to consciousness, however bumpy the ride may be.

For those who believe in reincarnation, this lunation could offer a great deal of healing in terms of releasing attachment to suffering which continues to echo through your lifetimes. A heightened experience of that suffering may well be the catalyst for release, as those patterns make themselves more clear by ceasing to operate in the background, hidden and undetectable.

On March 4, Mercury, Venus and Chiron form a triple conjunction at the end of Pisces, the last conjunction of those three planets in the sign of Pisces since Chiron entered the sign of the fishes back in April 2010. Chiron leaves Pisces and heads into pioneering Aries on April 17, and this loving send off from Venus and Mercury can offer some insight into how you have evolved your relationship to the fact of being a sensitive, vulnerable creature. The human being is innately vulnerable, from the time of birth into utter helplessness and dependency that lasts many years of early life, to the adult recognition of the relational nature of our existence…the fact of relationship means there will be wounds, hurts and wrongs which happen.

Chiron’s eight years in Pisces has provided a portal of insight into those very tender areas of our relationship to the divine—a relationship which is reflected in our relationship to the entire Earth Community, with its interdependence and demands for our presence as embodied Soul. The triple conjunction of Mercury, Venus and Chiron this Sunday would be well honored by journaling—particularly in poetic, metaphorical or beautiful language—concerning the last eight years’ evolution or transformation around the theme of vulnerability, dependence and interdependence, and the profound emotional pain or wounding we can encounter in the process of trying to access and offer our greatest gifts. Celebrate the successes and honor the rough-going parts or setbacks of this time—Chiron asks us to take in the whole picture, for the setbacks can become our greater teachers. Experiment with turning off the inner critic and allowing the poet of you step forward, because we each contain a poetic mode. You may be surprised by the voice or voices which announce themselves, adding a recognition of your resilience and your fragility to the harvest of the Virgo Full Moon.
