Power and Motivation: Astrology of Feb. 12 – Feb. 18, 2019

Mars-Uranus: Get moving!

The weekly astrological forecast portends several energetic shifts in our skies. We start off with a great big shove from action-oriented Mars finally completing his conjunction with electrifying Uranus in the feisty sign of Aries (exact Feb. 12). We may be more in the mood to challenge beliefs and attitudes, as well as experience a challenge of our sense of direction! Shall we tilt at this windmill? Or that one? Or is there an entirely different and more productive road to travel? The most willful road—the path of I, Me, Mine and F-the-world—may seem the most appealing in the moment, but it also may be wise to wait until Mars enters Taurus (Feb. 14) a few days later before making any life-changing decisions which are wrapped up in sudden anger, pure rebellion or resentment. Mars in Taurus might give us a better lay of land for making any bold moves. On the other hand, if we’ve been unable to take an important step forward or are caught up in limiting beliefs, this extra bolt of energy could at least get something moving!

Saturn-Uranus-Pluto: Who’s got the power?

Mars’ conjunction with Uranus also forms a kind of kickstarter for the larger world transit of Uranus square Saturn-Pluto, which will run through Dec. 2021. Saturn-Uranus-Pluto periods of time challenge not only the status quo (existing conditions) but also those who believe themselves to be the vanguard of change bringing an answer to the world’s woes. The intensification (Pluto) of radical (Uranus) backlash (Saturn) is one possibility and in the current climate it is hard to pin “radical” on just one political persuasion. We might see even more unpredictable splitting (Uranus) amidst all the polarization (Saturn-Pluto) around the world—and note that unpredictable doesn’t automatically mean bad or undesirable. There will likely be echoes back to the 2007 – 2012 Saturn-Uranus-Pluto T-square formation which correlated to an economic crisis, in keeping with the economic upheavals under previous Saturn-Uranus-Pluto T-square alignments in history. Since Saturn and Uranus will continue to square each other from 2021–2023 outside of the direct orb of influence of power-broker Pluto, our current time period may be more focused on questions of “the sources of power.”

What is power anyway?

I have a perception of power as something dynamic. I define power as the ability to cause or prevent change which arises out of the fact of communion (a fundamental relatedness). It’s not an object that one or another person or thing possesses but is more of a dynamic that is co-created. To summarize the observations of Gene Sharp, a scholar of nonviolence, the power of all rulers and hierarchical systems, including tyrants and oppressors, resides within the attitudes, behaviors, cooperation and obedience of the governed. So if power does arise from relationship, a thorough examination of how we are connected to one another seems the order of the day. And across all scales, because the larger collective movements of the Soul of the World are enacted by individuals and in individual lives.

Venus-Saturn sextile Neptune: Right relations

This is an appropriate reflection for sociable Venus’ sextile to empathic Neptune (exact Feb. 17), as she also sidles up next to the make-or-break energy of Saturn, putting a spotlight on “right relations.” We have our “ideals” (Neptune) and then there is “what actually is” (Saturn). Venus-Saturn can correlate to sweet karmic friendship, long-lasting bonds filled with loyalty and mutual support. And it can also point to what would stand in the way of enduring connection and the sweetness that is available to us, as well as whether loyalty is authentic or will not last through rough times. We might encounter where we have outsourced the leverage points of our power or where we can improve the quality of our existing connections. Transits involving Venus plus Saturn are a classic for “clearing out relations” and that doesn’t have to spell The End. Not at all. With maturity and discernment, we could actually come much closer to our Sacred Others—but only if we’re not compromising ourselves or our deepest truths. Many of us may experience the frustrations of inequalities in maturity levels which can make negotiations difficult. It’s very hard for one person’s maturity to carry the entire load especially in a relationship between peers.

Sun sextile Uranus: What do we serve?

Meanwhile, the identity-bringer of the Sun makes a helpful sextile to freedom-seeking Uranus (exact Feb. 17) which can support our aspirations to remain true to ourselves and our own values. If there is a dispute cropping up, it could be very helpful to identify how serving our own values serves the relationship—or if it doesn’t!

Putting the “I” in “we”: Astrology of September 18 – September 24, 2018

The Aries Full Moon on Sept. 24 at 7:52pm US/Pacific issues a frank declaration: cut the crap. This Full Moon forms a no-nonsense exact T-square with stern Saturn that looks like business. Whereas Saturn’s influence may inhibit expression, the continued dynamism of fiery Mars squaring surprising Uranus and also squaring relational Venus is stirring things up a little more than usual. We may receive or give a harsh or critical appraisal that may not be completely off base, though any long-repressed unspoken feelings could cloud our perception. It will not be so easy to hide your mistakes or your true feelings—your cover may be blown!

Making the most of the few days leading up to this Full Moon by internally acknowledging how you feel and what you believe could defuse arguments so that stern but stable Saturn’s influence can bring in some calm, calculated communication. It will also be helpful to consider opposing perspectives and to make a sincere effort to represent other people’s beliefs, actions and (apparent) motivations truthfully. Fidelity to other perspectives will steer you clear of accusations and entanglement in unnecessary intrigues, and could also shed new light on an old or troublesome issue through open dialogue.

2018 Aries Full Moon

Chatty Mercury makes their superior conjunction to the Sun in discreet Virgo (exact. Sep. 20), but Mercury is moving fast at this point in their cycle, leaping into Libra on Sep. 21 and immediately opposing the sensitive centaur, Chiron in Aries. You may be challenged to understand what holds you back from taking charge, or you may get a good look at failures to consider your impact on others. This aspect generally speaks to the tug of war between the individual self (Aries) and the relational self (Libra) and it may be necessary to verbalize boundaries as well as point out where your boundaries have been crossed. Experiment with placing yourself first as a way of taking responsibility for your actions and your words. Putting yourself in the driver’s seat here isn’t so much about running over other people as it is about becoming the individual being that is necessary to create real relationship.

We may find ourselves hashing it out particularly with workmates, siblings or peers and again, it’s necessary to take responsibility for our own decisions by daring to be an individual self with thoughts, feelings and experiences. Any tendency to place undue responsibility on others for what you say, do or feel will likely come right back at you with a “WRONG ANSWER” written all over it. Of course, we’re all tied together in a network of mutuality, but the spotlight is now on our capacity to show up for ourselves in a way that acknowledges our real duties, responsibilities and obligations.

The full forecast for this week, an abbreviated version appears in the Anima Mundi Apothecary newsletter:

It’s a busy week here at the midpoint of Mars’ two months in retrograde motion with Mercury stationing retrograde (July 25) just before a very dynamic total lunar eclipse on July 27. However, the week opens with the relational graces of Venus opposing transcendental Neptune (exact July 24), alerting us to be wary of painting too rosy or too gloomy a picture of our friends, workmates or romantic partners. While this influence is strong for a short week, it will also place its stamp on the total lunar eclipse so that its meaning will unfold through at least the next six months. With Venus-Neptune comes a strong suggestion to be faithful to the quest for truth—how you come into knowledge of the truth will be just as important as grasping the “simple facts.”

Do you have a tendency to get swept into gossip? Gossip is a tool of the powerless and the powerful alike, and in its more negative form seeks to undermine others rather than support and draw out the best in everyone. Gossip can be mean-spirited or simply come from a wounded place, so that it drains a community’s vitality, damaging some connections while making others more influential than they otherwise would be. We all participate in gossip to some degree, but check in on your motivations for participating in conversations about others which do not include the direct input of those others. And carefully consider the motivations of those who would share or create gossip with you. Your quest for truth and serving divine purposes will be best supported by an attitude of compassion toward whatever pain, wounding or unmet need pushes people to create alliances or a feeling of security through sharing secrets or making a spectacle of human shortcomings.

As we appraise the value and merit of various communications and perspectives, take note: if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Not only the “too good” but the “too awful” as well…if you come across the perfect monster to fit your worst nightmares, that may also be too good to be true! All the same, we may be witnessing many hopeful new partnerships forming and then dissolving, as well as existing partnerships breaking up or changing significantly over the next six months. Stability in general is challenged but don’t forget to reach out to your connections to the other-than-human world—plant, animal and mineral allies, the nature spirits you commune with and all types of earthly connection with the divine will help guide you through the confusion that Mars’ and Mercury’s retrograde may be churning up.

The total lunar eclipse happens on July 27 at 1:20pm US/Pacific at 4° Aquarius and involves a close, tense aspect to the summer-long square between Mars and Uranus. If you are drawn to blaze a new path, know that a working through of the past—or being worked over by past actions, or karma—will not be easily avoided. The long-term influences of Saturn trine Uranus and Jupiter trine Neptune can help open your heart to more challenging realizations about yourself as well as others. Ask what practical, grounded ideals of beauty might enable you to work with your karma in a more generative way, while being wary of over-idealizing your own capacities or noble intentions. (It’s okay to be human—really!!) Especially do not mistake a feeling of confident enthusiasm with a well-considered action. You might check the houses of your natal chart that the Sun in Leo and the Moon in Aquarius fall in to see which areas of your life are potentiated. While you may not be surprised by the areas of life which are highlighted, there may yet be a surprising new wrinkle, a relief, an unburdening, a blessing—even if that blessing comes in disguise.

Key dates for Mercury retrograde:
July 6, 2018 – Mercury enters shadow 11° Leo
July 25, 2018 – Mercury stations retrograde 23° Leo
Aug. 18, 2018 – Mercury stations direct 11° Leo
Sept. 1, 2018 – Mercury exits shadow 23° Leo
