Separating to Unite: Astrology of the week of Mar. 18 – Mar. 25, 2019

This week’s astrological forecast is written for the plant-wise Anima Mundi Apothecary newsletter!

Welcome to the equinox and the Libra Full Moon at 6:42pm US/Pacific on March 20, 2019! This week centers on the experience of being an individual involved in creating and maintaining relationship, and all the ways we find it hard to be an individual with our own will, needs and desires. Any recent readjustments to the Venusian parts of life—finances, intimacy, friendship, energy exchange—may reach a crescendo or finale point as we consider what it means to be “selfish.” Mercury’s continuing retrograde motion invites us to connect on emotional levels as logical understanding could be hard to achieve during negotiations with important relationships. But the understanding that relationships happen between separate entities—and are impossible when we are merged with others—could come in waves of revelation over the next two weeks.

Virgo Full Moon 2019

The Virgo Full Moon presides over this week, shining a light on our hopes, dreams, aspirations…and their many, many shortcomings. Within the context of dicey Uranus square Saturn-Pluto, attempts at improving social conditions are not doomed to fail but rather beset by problems. While we may witness serious in-fighting and dissension around whether a reform or a proposal is “good enough” in the outer world, there could be quite the inner dialog along similar lines. The radiant Sun’s entry into the dreamland of Pisces (Feb. 18) with the “bring it to Earth” conjunction of Venus-Saturn-Pluto is emphasizing strategy, maturity and realistic goal-setting to make our dreams a reality. Many things may be wearing thin at this time and taking time to inventory our assets in terms of what is working well and all the positives in our lives will do more to create realistic plans than focusing only on what’s breaking down.

Find good counsel

The planet of communication Mercury also joins nebulous Neptune in a helpful sextile to Venus-Saturn-Pluto under the Virgo Full Moon, offering a softer perspective on the pressure we may be experiencing in our love life, money life and/or social life. It suggests that we may get helpful guidance from those who are not directly entangled in whatever is transitioning into or out of our lives—so seek out that wise counsel! Not the merely practical, those friends and advisors who are all too happy to tell you what they think you “should do,” but those who can guide you to your own true knowing by asking the right questions. And in solidarity with you and whatever hard or difficult choices you may be faced with. This time period in particular could reveal where we are trying to ride two horses at once, how we are working against ourselves in some way.

Mercury retrograde incoming

Tricky Mercury is now gearing up for their retrograde phase, though. They will station retrograde on March 5 at 29° Pisces and back up to 16° Pisces which means that they’ve just entered the path of their retrograde during the Virgo Full Moon. This time in the path of their retrograde is referred to as the “shadow period,” and we can expect some of Mercury’s mischief and merriment to be afoot. Neptune is heavily involved which suggests a fair amount of confusion, getting bogged down in thoughts or losing track of items. At its worst, it could indicate outright deception or lies of omission (failing to disclose information). With such an emphasis on Neptune in this retrograde, it doesn’t have to be intentional deception, but be a very innocent if painful case of two people having completely different understandings of the same conversation, agreement or discussion. It is worthwhile to take the precaution of getting things in writing so they can be reviewed. For example, after a conversation, you could carefully write out your understanding in an email and request a response of agreement or any clarifications.

Connect to the divine mind and heal our own

And there are some very positive aspects of the combination of Mercury and Neptune! All of you artists, visionaries, writers, poets, musicians—catch the wave! From now until mid-April will be an excellent time for re-working your compositions or allowing the Muse to flow in freely and freshly. Don’t expect a completely finished product to arrive—though it could happen—it’s better to just be open to what comes, capture it in some way and allow it to evolve. (AND make backups my friends, make a religion of pressing “Save,” it is impossible to kneel too often at that altar in these conditions.) Whatever has a life of its own will take shape over time if you continue to feed and care for it and remain curious about what is waiting within that seed.

It is also an excellent time for creating a different relationship with the inner critic and judge, by tapping into the right hemisphere of the brain and bringing warmth and caring presence to ourselves and whatever may be frustrating for us. Relational neuroscience offers us quite a few insights into practical, accessible ways of doing just that, for example in Sarah Peyton’s groundbreaking work Your Resonant Self.

Mercury-Jupiter-Neptune: Words should be weighed and not counted

To establish a new relationship with our habitual mind and begin to turn towards ourselves and our shortcomings with warmth, caring and love would be a grand expression of Mercury’s mind together with wholing Jupiter and healing Neptune in the retrograde. And this combination also calls to mind the Yiddish proverb, “Words should be weighed and not counted.” Look out for logorrhea—compulsive, repetitive, excessive wordiness—throughout Mercury’s retrograde period. It is advisable to stop to consider the impact of words we may choose rather than trying to connect through an overabundance of words. As hard as it can be—especially with communicative Mercury feeling so unbridled and free—I try to practice the orientation of one of my Buddhist teachers, Rina Sircar: “Does what I have to say improve upon the silence?”

Looking for the Center: Astrology of September 11 – September 18, 2018

***Check out NEW Real Imaginal Daily Divinations on Instagram!***

The story in the sky this week centers on sweet Venus’ opposition to erratic Uranus (exact Sept. 12), which is sharply punctuated by a T-square formation with the swordsman himself, Mars. We can expect the beginnings (or a deepening) of a re-organization in our social sphere which may impact our friendships, our sources of income, our intimate partnerships and our ideas about how to love and be loved. While the period of Sept. 7 through Sept. 16 may produce a number of shocks or major turns, it is reasonable to expect various consequences and additional wrinkles to the plot to roll into the Venus retrograde this fall. (See bottom for key dates of the 2018 Venus retrograde.)

Since aesthetically attuned Venus makes her retrogrades in a symmetrical fashion, retrograding through the same part of the zodiac every eight years, it is useful to reflect on what was going on for you in fall 2010 in the sphere of love, friendships, money and sex. You might also reflect on what was happening for you around the topic(s) of the house(s) she was retrograding through in your personal chart as these areas of life will similarly be stimulated during the present retrograde. You can also reach back in memory to previous retrogrades for hints and suggestions of what may unfurl this fall, such as 2002, 1994, 1986 and so on. This particular retrograde is notable for its overlap with the Mars retrograde which is winding down (Mars leaves the shadow of his retrograde on Nov. 12) and its opposition to the revolutionary impulses of Uranus. There could be alternating periods of confusion and clarity around key relationships in your life which have anchored your identity up to this point. Re-orienting to a different social self may be unpleasant at times but it will ultimately be liberating, as you tune into the demands of Saturn in Capricorn, who wants solid life support structures. Fortunately, stabilizing Saturn’s harmonious trine aspect to earthquaking Uranus offers a bit of support for a more life-affirming movement.

The planet of mind, Mercury makes their opposition to illogical Neptune (exact Sep. 13), which can make clear thinking a bit challenging. As suggested for last week’s New Moon in discerning Virgo, altering one’s consciousness in various ways could catalyze access to greater spiritual knowledge, particularly as Mercury applies to their trine with the penetrating depths of Pluto (exact Sep. 15). It is not necessary to take powerful mind-altering substances, particularly since the astro-weather already heightens the potential for reaching into more transcendent or inscendent realms of consciousness. In fact, centering practices such as meditation, contemplative practice and mantras as well as yoga asana can be much more useful in bringing some focus to what could otherwise be a blurry or indistinct state of mind. Exploring more artistic and poetic modes of expression is also supported, as Pluto’s influence brings even more of the underworld of the unconscious to the surface. However, this could also translate into messy conversations with a great deal of misunderstanding and suspicion or paranoia mixed in! Slow down and take it easy if you are in a contentious situation as the air may clear of its own accord by the end of the week.

Key dates for Venus retrograde:
Sept. 3, 2018 – Venus enters shadow 25° Libra
Oct. 5, 2018 – Venus stations retrograde 10° Scorpio
Nov. 16, 2018 – Venus stations direct 25° Libra
Dec. 16, 2018 – Venus exits shadow 10° Scorpio

Squaring Off with Duality: Astrology of June 5 – June 12, 2018

With apologies for missing last week’s forecast due to travel and illness.

We kick off this week with an incredibly watery, Neptunian sky promising a hazy picture of reality and its possible contents. While Mercury’s superior conjunction to the Sun at 15° Gemini (exact June 5) could ordinarily signify clarity, both the Sun and Mercury are making a square to Neptune in Pisces (exact June 6), which could indicate quite a bit of confusion, miscommunication or misunderstanding. The potential for outright deception is there as well, though it is worth taking a moment to wonder if such deceptions are the product of your own desires or biases. Mercury is at home in Gemini and is less concerned with “truth” than with “information” while in its home sign, so take care to locate your interpretations in a proper context. (Pro tip: Reach out to people and give them a chance to show up as real people, rather than reducing them to bit players in your own self-centered storylines.)

Neptune at its best is the quest for ultimate, spiritual or transcendent truth but it is a cosmic force which absolutely begs for our self-reflection. Leaping to conclusions may prove particularly hurtful as they reveal some of your own inner conflicts or dualities, and with Venus opposing Pluto (exact June 5) we might well expect some double standards to be exposed and/or enforced.

The Moon’s square to the Sun in its Last Quarter phase (exact June 6) also highlights exposure of where you may be of two minds about something or someone. You may even encounter a strong contradiction within you—such as the beliefs “I’m just a casual drinker” versus “I have a problem with alcohol.” But don’t expect clear, rational thinking about such contradictions, at least not at first. You may discover much more by dialoging with your dreams, working with images and metaphor, engaging the emergent reality of the mythic realm—try listening to your experiences as you would a dream, hopefully with great reverence for the autonomy of the image or the other, recognizing that the image’s or the other’s separate, lived reality is very different from your own. What might you learn if you offer your diffuse attention with a respectful curiosity to what may be an otherwise annoying or frustrating experience(s) or perspective(s)? If insight isn’t forthcoming, it may be better to record images and impressions and wait until next week to review or revisit when the Sun moves away from Neptune and Mercury begins to oppose Saturn.

“Dreamscape (where im free)” by Paolo Marco Mañalac

Because the Last Quarter Moon square Sun aspect draws both Mercury and Neptune squarely into our considerations, remember that Mercury-Neptune responds well to what are often referred to as nonordinary states of consciousness. Examples of this kind of consciousness includes dream states, waking reveries, and mystical states of consciousness which reach into domains beyond the so-called normal or ego-based. They can be induced by REM sleep, meditation, repetition of mantra or chant, trance induction, hyperventilation, or with the help of various catalysts from the plant realm (fermented plants, herbal tinctures, certain mushrooms, marijuana, etc). Humans have been altering their consciousness for millennia for the purposes of obtaining initiatory visions, healing, receiving new powers, negotiating with “the deities that be” and many other reasons. These states aren’t useless to us, but they require their own special time and space. Give some appropriate time and space to the exploration of expanded or altered states of consciousness, and aim for healing insight or spiritual knowledge and you will make very good use of this week’s astro-weather.

Sometimes we have to surrender our obsession with goals in order to receive certain gifts along the way which will ultimately aid us. Fighting against any indication that we need to slow down or perhaps pause for some kind of reflection will not only squander an opportunity but just add to the frustration. Why try to write a technical manual when a poem is called for? For those of us who are beset by deadlines, try giving some time over to the playful, open and curious engagement of the mythic or the imaginal, and you may find that honoring those other worlds gives you your concentration back—and may even release you from a previously unrecognized burden.
