Corbels from Notre-Dame-de-la-Grande-Sauve, Spain with columns

I’m pleased to introduce Healing Earth in the Real Imaginal, a series of conversations with Kirsten Love Lauzon from Healing Earth. Using the work of international facilitator and neuroscience educator Sarah Peyton as a launch pad, we explore the topic of relational neuroscience—which is essentially the study of the impact and effect of other people’s presence on our nervous systems, well-being, development and so on. In this first conversation we especially focus in on what these studies reveal about prevention of and healing from personal and collective trauma. We also explore the interconnection of the topics of astrology, modern consciousness studies and systemic/family constellations. Please have a listen and let us know what you think!

Triggering transit: Venus-Saturn-Pluto

It has been an emotional week for so many of us, with the identity of the Sun and the mind of Mercury floating through empathic Pisces and highlighting the depths of feeling. Together with relational Venus’ interactions with clarifying Saturn and pulverizing Pluto, our intimate lives may have been put through the washing machine. For others of us this influence may have brought a measure of clarity to what must be released or otherwise changed in order for a constructive way forward to emerge. Relationship-maker Venus’ passage through structure-seeking Capricorn has also provided a trigger for the destabilizing and restructuring world transit of Saturn-Uranus-Pluto, which will continue to test the foundations of societies for the next two years. For example, the conflict in Kashmir between Pakistan and India has just escalated with each country launching airstrikes against the other for the first time since 1971. Michael Cohen is testifying to the US Congress against US President Donald Trump while North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Trump meet in Viet Nam for discussion of nuclear armaments. In a hopefully lighter example, news broke over the last few days of a failed 1970s Soviet probe meant to explore Venus that may crash to Earth in the next year or two—it is an eerie evocation of the breakdown associated with Saturn-Pluto via a literal failed attempt to connect with the planet Venus.

Venus-Uranus: Do we abandon ourselves or are we being abandoned by others?

And if we’re still resisting needed ch-ch-ch-changes, Venus making a square to liberator Uranus (exact Mar. 1) may give us another push. Venus-Uranus likes freedom to experience, with its love (Venus) of the novel and the unusual (Uranus). And all the practicality and prudence of Capricorn will likely slough off quickly once Venus enters the sign of forward-thinking Aquarius (Mar. 1). Abandonment fears may also surface in these conditions and we’ll need to call in our resources—external and internal—to ensure the Orphan of us doesn’t hijack our life’s storyline. While Venus makes a supportive sextile aspect to achy-breaky Chiron newly in Aries (exact Mar. 1) our connection to moments of being abandoned or cut out of the group or being left behind can bubble up. Particularly if there was bullying involved—whether we were giving or receiving—or if the perception that our expressions of independence or defiance would not be tolerated.

Another call to action with Sun sextile Mars

The Sun’s beacon of self-awareness makes a smooth sextile to warrior Mars (exact Feb. 27), perhaps adding a little more oomph and energy to the Sun’s Piscean dreams which can drift and swirl like quiet pools in a river. We could get a needed confidence boost or a reminder of some of our larger desires. As this sextile continues strong through Mar. 11 and pulls Neptune into the conversation, what began as an inkling of a plan or a direction this week may blossom into something more substantial. Note that we may also experience this influence as a bit irritating if we are indeed chafing under the harness of something we no longer desire to pull along in our lives. And confusion that is coming along for the ride with this irritation could represent a sign of learning how to do something differently, or just needing to surrender a bit to the process. Karmic patterns are simply magnified over the next few years, for better and for worse.

The equinox is just behind us and our week opens with the vibrant Sun squaring somber Saturn (exact Sept. 25) while underworldly Pluto comes rumbling to a halt (stationing direct Sept. 30). Some of us will be feeling the strain of work or responsibility or just a general sobering of our exuberance as Saturn reminds us of the details we overlooked or the mistakes and problems yet to be resolved. Pluto’s slowing intensifies his presence wherever he is transiting our personal chart—it’s hard to forget the time I once found a half-decomposed mouse in my recycling bin, swimming with Pluto’s regenerative if repulsive lifeforms, just as Pluto was stationing. We may be catching a greater whiff of the stench of needed if unwanted decay in personal, professional and civic spheres and it will be helpful to alternate between disgust and reverence for the whole process. There is a good reason we tend to prefer to steer clear of death and decay, and yet its presence is vital to the continuance of life. How can your repulsion guide you towards life-affirming actions, decisions and affiliations with others? Can you remain humble to the fact that you, too, have a “sinister side?”

With communicative Mercury in the sky approaching their square to regenerative Pluto, our thoughts might quite naturally drift down into the broody depths. And while we may be confronted with important information we have failed to notice until now, there may be little we can do about it, at least in the immediate term. And yet the desire to act will be spurred by the Sun’s trine to energetic Mars (exact Sept. 27) and so we may try to plough ahead with renewed, optimistic intensity. Will this work? Maybe.

Because the planet of harmony Venus is also slowing down to make her retrograde station (Oct. 5) and may also bring some unexpected twists to normally functional social relations. Our attempts to assert ourselves could be ill-received or just go nowhere, as needed connections or supports remain elusive, or require more of us than we expected. On the other hand, your assertion could lead in an unexpected direction and it would be wise to take it slowly and use the incoming Mercury-Pluto influence to gather good intel—listen carefully, peer beneath surfaces, don’t settle for the superficial perspective. Just be careful of bumping into a hornet’s nest or stepping into a yellowjacket hive as you go!  Tender situations are easily provoked and it’s possible that your investigations will reveal more than you ever actually wanted to know. But stick with a low and slow tempo for most of this week—patience can pay greater dividends than charging at windmills or banging your head against a door that’s not ready to open.

Note, too, that the trickster Mercury is now scouting out ahead of the Sun and aspecting Pluto before the Sun does, perhaps bringing you hints, clues and tidbits that will prepare you for the meaning of upcoming Venus retrograde (in Pluto’s sign of Scorpio, also backing into her home sign of Libra) as well as the upcoming square of the Sun to Pluto (exact Oct. 11). Listen in to the end of this week and the beginning of the next for clues about your mid-October plans. Not only could secrets, betrayals and “shady” types of information surface, but word could come from powerful allies, shapeshifting peers or even siblings, as well as powerful inner figures. If you’ve been playing around with malevolent or unwholesome forces without any real understanding of what it is you’re dabbling in—take notice. Some kind of fallout from those associations is imminent. The Aries Full Moon we’ve just experienced (on Sept. 24) will have likely triggered or confirmed these developments.

2019 RETREATS   I am excited to share that astrologer Renn Butler and I will be offering another holotropic breathwork + archetypal astrology + dreamwork retreat in summer 2019!  Watch this space for more details and to save the date!

On Sept. 29, I will be giving a Kepler online webinar on An Uncommon Saturn Return: The Capricorn Stellium of 1988-1991 (registration at the link).

Welcome to the equinox! The equinox marks spring in the northern hemisphere and autumn in the southern hemisphere as the Sun enters the tropical sign of Aries on March 20, offering us a month to consider beginnings, motivations and goals, and locating the energy to make a fresh start or three.

Sun square Mars (exact on March 24) and Venus square Pluto (exact on March 23) offers us a meditation on our notion of courage or bravery, and its relationship to vulnerability. For many people, the idea of courage is tangled up with the idea of harming others, or of inflicting one’s will on others. And it seems that we can be most motivated to tell the truth—that is, to be courageous and vulnerable—only if it is accompanied by hurting someone else. The energy of anger (Mars) emerges to pierce social, familial or personal taboos concerning honesty about one’s desires, needs or experience but instead of lending itself to understanding, honesty driven by unmetabolized or unreflective anger tends to lead to warfare, resistance or more confusion. Perhaps this anger and defensiveness tries to provide a cover for vulnerability, to deflect from this and create distractions from unpleasant emotions. If this seems familiar to you, you might ask if honesty employed as an offensive (yet secretly defensive) measure really serves you?

It is worthwhile to reflect on any such tendencies this week for it is actually possible and quite amazing to be courageous in a way that is also vulnerable, that also invites in the experience of the other without having to compromise your own experience. And although an understanding may be achieved, that understanding may still involve parting ways with others, with outdated behavioral patterns, with various elements of the past which impede a better and brighter future. If you are called to honesty or to assert yourself this week, may you be vulnerageous (courageously vulnerable) and not try to cover up your feelings of exposure through acts of meanness or cruelty. It is totally possible to be honest and to be kind at the same time. In fact, you could be doing others the biggest favor in the world by being honest with them—and with yourself!! Even if it may not feel particularly good in the moment.

Because beware, dear reader. Mercury conjoined Venus in Pisces on March 4, and instead of speeding past her, due to Mercury’s retrograde they joined once again on March 19, at the degree of Mercury’s station. Being duplicitous and trying to say whatever you think will get you what you want under this Mercury retrograde may indeed backfire. What you get will most likely be something quite different from what you wanted, as your “pretty words” or attempts to be nice rather than be real do not drive home the true depth or gravity of the message you wish to convey. Diplomacy is always a good idea, but not at the expense of integrity. Many of us will be reflecting on what spans the spectrum of kindness to cruelty, diplomacy to deceit during this Mercury retrograde which runs through May 3.

The Sun in Aries can indicate an aggravated kind of energy that is prone to conflict, simply because of its direct and pointed nature. One great way to temper this tendency is to take an approach of advocacy, even advocating for oneself, for example, instead of adopting a defensive or aggressive posture. And even though diplomacy could be complicated during the Mercury retrograde period, it can be helpful to orient towards a goal which serves some higher principles, anchoring your actions in the best of motivations without fooling yourself about what you want and how you go about getting it.

In fact, one interesting potential of this particular Mercury retrograde period is taking time to get in touch with—frankly—the complete jerk inside of you. The one who is aggressive, aggravated as hell and simply aggravating. This process will be different for different people and note that the aggravated one inside of you may be impatient with YOU rather than anything in the outside world! If you are one who regularly acts out the inner jerk, it is a great opportunity to revisit your relationship with that part of you. Are your needs actually being met by that part of you? Is the disruption that it is causing in your life actually wanted? Or are you making yourself (and others) miserable with a combative attitude? For those who suppress the inner jerk, it’s also a fantastic time to re-evaluate that relationship, too. Mars has an important function to fulfill in helping us to achieve our personal goals—and it’s wonderful when those are connected to greater values and a sense of belonging to the community of life. But everyone has needs and desires and a will to create. Whether you suppress this part or inflate this part of you, how might you listen more carefully to what this aggravated part of you is saying? What is the aggravation really pointing to? You just might discover a great ally who can help you determine your energetic limits and what you can actually physically accomplish and do!

Key dates:

Mar. 22 Mercury stations retrograde at 16° Aries
