Planting Seeds: Astrology of Jan. 1 – Jan. 7, 2019

Welcome to the first week of 2019 and the onset of regular contractions in the birthing process of the larger Saturn-Pluto story of 2018–2021. The birth pangs that began in 2017 and quickened in 2018 will be taking greater shape in personal and collective lives. The week has a somewhat somber or leaden beginning with the Sun spotlighting depressive Saturn (exact conjunction Jan. 1), bringing loose ends, insecurities, insufficiencies and a feeling of lack or loss into awareness. Saturn likes to think of himself as The Real Reality™? but can often bring paralyzing distortions through an overly negative or pessimistic outlook. It can be helpful to step back from the way we are framing our “problems” and notice whether the way we think about them creates a dead end where there may in fact be a great way forward. The fresh start of desirous Mars’ recent entry into impulsive Aries (Dec. 31 – Feb. 14) will benefit from having a direction that is informed by a sense of history, responsibility and even duty—both to ourselves and to others. Resist compromising and rather let the internal pressure that builds shape new responses and new perspectives.

The emissary of our thinking mind, Mercury will make a helpful trine to innovating Uranus (exact Jan. 3) as the centering power of the Sun forms a supportive sextile aspect to Dream Maker Neptune (exact Jan. 4). These two influences can bring an assist to any struggle between “the new” and “the old” that may be churning within. These two days offer us a quick liminal or in-between space to waver and tremble in before Mercury enters Capricorn (Jan. 4 – Jan. 23) and turns our thoughts towards the more practical side of life. Dreamers must become doers in these times of mass planetary change and that means not dumping your Soul’s desires and its part in the dream of the Earth for the illusion of safety or control.

Along those lines, trickster Uranus has been quite busy overturning all the apple carts labeled “safety” and “stability” and it is a good use of Uranus’ direct station (Jan. 6) to reflect on how Uranus has transited your chart since entering Aries in May 2010. How has your life been altered according to the topics of the house(s) which Uranus transited, as well as Uranus’ transits to your personal planets? Uranus pushes us towards expression of our unique qualities and gifts—things that no other organism in Earth Community has and which Earth Community needs in order to flourish and creatively respond to the ceaseless motions of life’s unfolding. Whereas most of us have an understandable desire for things to be reliable, predictable, and what-is-known—when this keeps us from blossoming and sharing our nectar with others, Uranus will rattle our cage. Uranus will leave Aries for good this year, and their Jan. 6 station to direct motion may correspond to some validation of the changes it has brought over the last nine years—which can be exciting! and terrifying! and liberating! and all of the above.

Capricorn New Moon 2019 horoscope

Which brings us to the partial eclipse on the Capricorn New Moon of Jan. 5, 2019 at 5:28pm US/Pacific. This is the opening eclipse in the Cancer/Capricorn series which will run through July 2020. Since this New Moon falls at the midpoint of Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn, we may receive a preview of what Saturn-Pluto holds for the year ahead and it makes a difference whether we identify as a victim of or as an active participant in the upheaval and evolution of our life and times.

This is not to dismiss any real victimization that is happening but more to highlight the importance of holding our own vision of a more beautiful world and acting from that place. And given that we have far less control over much of our circumstances than we would probably like, it makes a difference if we act from the parts of us that do have some choice, some influence, some ability to create in the midst of what can feel like (and may actually be) a fairly despairing situation. The insightful author of the book Emergent Strategy, adrienne maree brown, composed the following mantras and they are so fitting to the tone of this year: “I am no victim of life; I shape change. We are not victims of circumstance; we shape change.” “I am a microcosm of all the possible justice, liberation, pleasure and honesty in the universe, and I act accordingly.” “I remember that I exist only in relationship to other people and systems.”

Here are some thought-provoking ideas around intentions you might place within this New Moon, to carry into the intensity of Saturn-Pluto’s 2019 landscape and its strange need to change us:
• Bring in other major transits of 2019, Jupiter square Neptune and Saturn sextile Neptune and open to healing our relationship to belief itself.
• Reflect on your desire to be an individual Sun, a shining star (Leo) and how that was impacted by the Leo/Aquarius eclipse cycle. Then reflect on your aspirations to belong to a whole, to the family of life (Cancer) and how your Sun, your shining star can contribute to nourishing the whole (including Self).
• Dream deeply. Go to the source within you. How do you want to live your values and be accountable to yourself, your Dream and your communities?
• How do you want to contribute to the healing and repair of our world? The significance is in your inspired connection to and passion for the task—not in its relative merits or valuation by others or by society.

Squaring Off with Duality: Astrology of June 5 – June 12, 2018

With apologies for missing last week’s forecast due to travel and illness.

We kick off this week with an incredibly watery, Neptunian sky promising a hazy picture of reality and its possible contents. While Mercury’s superior conjunction to the Sun at 15° Gemini (exact June 5) could ordinarily signify clarity, both the Sun and Mercury are making a square to Neptune in Pisces (exact June 6), which could indicate quite a bit of confusion, miscommunication or misunderstanding. The potential for outright deception is there as well, though it is worth taking a moment to wonder if such deceptions are the product of your own desires or biases. Mercury is at home in Gemini and is less concerned with “truth” than with “information” while in its home sign, so take care to locate your interpretations in a proper context. (Pro tip: Reach out to people and give them a chance to show up as real people, rather than reducing them to bit players in your own self-centered storylines.)

Neptune at its best is the quest for ultimate, spiritual or transcendent truth but it is a cosmic force which absolutely begs for our self-reflection. Leaping to conclusions may prove particularly hurtful as they reveal some of your own inner conflicts or dualities, and with Venus opposing Pluto (exact June 5) we might well expect some double standards to be exposed and/or enforced.

The Moon’s square to the Sun in its Last Quarter phase (exact June 6) also highlights exposure of where you may be of two minds about something or someone. You may even encounter a strong contradiction within you—such as the beliefs “I’m just a casual drinker” versus “I have a problem with alcohol.” But don’t expect clear, rational thinking about such contradictions, at least not at first. You may discover much more by dialoging with your dreams, working with images and metaphor, engaging the emergent reality of the mythic realm—try listening to your experiences as you would a dream, hopefully with great reverence for the autonomy of the image or the other, recognizing that the image’s or the other’s separate, lived reality is very different from your own. What might you learn if you offer your diffuse attention with a respectful curiosity to what may be an otherwise annoying or frustrating experience(s) or perspective(s)? If insight isn’t forthcoming, it may be better to record images and impressions and wait until next week to review or revisit when the Sun moves away from Neptune and Mercury begins to oppose Saturn.

“Dreamscape (where im free)” by Paolo Marco Mañalac

Because the Last Quarter Moon square Sun aspect draws both Mercury and Neptune squarely into our considerations, remember that Mercury-Neptune responds well to what are often referred to as nonordinary states of consciousness. Examples of this kind of consciousness includes dream states, waking reveries, and mystical states of consciousness which reach into domains beyond the so-called normal or ego-based. They can be induced by REM sleep, meditation, repetition of mantra or chant, trance induction, hyperventilation, or with the help of various catalysts from the plant realm (fermented plants, herbal tinctures, certain mushrooms, marijuana, etc). Humans have been altering their consciousness for millennia for the purposes of obtaining initiatory visions, healing, receiving new powers, negotiating with “the deities that be” and many other reasons. These states aren’t useless to us, but they require their own special time and space. Give some appropriate time and space to the exploration of expanded or altered states of consciousness, and aim for healing insight or spiritual knowledge and you will make very good use of this week’s astro-weather.

Sometimes we have to surrender our obsession with goals in order to receive certain gifts along the way which will ultimately aid us. Fighting against any indication that we need to slow down or perhaps pause for some kind of reflection will not only squander an opportunity but just add to the frustration. Why try to write a technical manual when a poem is called for? For those of us who are beset by deadlines, try giving some time over to the playful, open and curious engagement of the mythic or the imaginal, and you may find that honoring those other worlds gives you your concentration back—and may even release you from a previously unrecognized burden.

Let Her Gently In: Astrology of May 1 – May 7, 2018

Aaaaannnndddd exhale slowly…. Congratulations on arriving in the month of May 2018. Mars in Capricorn is slowly separating from his fierce conjunction with the lord of the underworld, Pluto, offering a small break from the frantic pace of the past few weeks. Meanwhile the Sun is plowing through slow, steady Taurus, calling attention to our material circumstances and as the pressure eases (or continues to build, depending on your situation), the body might be crying out to you for comfort, nursing and rejuvenating attention. It is wise to heed that call and to stop to breathe deep, snatch cat naps, take some time to do nothing wherever possible. Observe the changing seasons of the Earth, see what is opening and closing, beginning and ending in this part of her journey around the Sun and rest up, friends. You will need your energy for the surprises of times soon to come.

If you take that Taurean turn towards slowing down and sensing, the Sun’s gentle sextile to the planet of enchantment, Neptune (exact May 6) will sigh with your Soul’s greater dreams, like a breeze fluttering against your skin. Can you sense these murmurings? These breezes of deep, mysterious truth? You might slow down and drop into reverie, so that something forgotten or momentarily overlooked in the crush of the recent Mercury retrograde and Mars-Saturn-Pluto conjunction can bubble up into awareness. Is there something catching at the edges of your ordinary life, tickling you just under your nose, and vanishing like a sneeze uncompleted—painful and poignant in its retraction—when you try to grab it? And alas, dissolving into mist again? These imaginal beings flitting about your edges are real, they have body, but to draw them into conversation you must dance around their matter…you must let them come to you as they will, as they are. Try daydreaming with wild abandon, or automatic writing, or randomly opening a book and reading whatever passage your eyes fall upon, or drawing without noticing what is taking shape under your hand, or walking through last night’s dream again and again without trying to figure out what it means. Sit with wonder and awe at the strangeness or queer familiarity of whatever emerges. Don’t try to contain the experience with your words or your ideas about it. Let these misty beings tell you their stories on their own terms and you will learn much about the dream that is dreaming you.

For something much older may be lying in wait beneath those gauzy figures, as Mercury squares Pluto (exact May 7), sending the divine messenger to confront whatever has been tying you in knots over the last two months. Has a negative fantasy polluted your lifestream for long enough? Maybe your true greatness has been overshadowed by someone else real or imagined, and proof of it comes now. Mercury will be eager to set things aright, regardless of resistances. Your own mind, bewitched or not, will seek to unburden itself, to be free to seek the truth, to blaze a new path with a sword sharpened by awareness. At last, you may recognize a source of sabotage. But be prepared for continuing to work it out, because revolutions will not be organized, most especially not in the year of 2018. The revolution will break over us, again and again, in frustrating loops of karmic burdens working themselves out through bodies constrained by time and limited perspective. Love these parts of you, make space for what takes its own time to work out, because this may offer you the wisdom and insight to do something new, something different, as gears begin to shift later in mid-May.

The goddess of love, Venus squares Neptune (exact May 7) adding to the confrontation of negative fantasy and distorted realities. For many, it will be an illusion of romance or the perfect partner or the perfect divine. What truly fits and serves the present and future? What is ready to be blessed, thanked and released? What can now take up residence in a different hallway, sacred chamber or alcove of the Soul, safe from doing further harm? Whatever disturbing thing may emerge now—whether more desirable or absolutely revolting—know that it will ultimately make a better future possible.
