Samsara’s Grip: Astrology of Jan. 22 – Jan. 28

Sweets amidst the stresses

The weekly astrology outlook of Real Imaginal features the ongoing Venus-Jupiter conjunction (exact Jan. 22), who provides an excellent chance to expand our networks, find like-minded collaborators and explore new ways of celebrating love. The emissary of love, Venus meeting up with the expansive nature of Jupiter offers us an experience of hope, faith in love or an opening of the heart—a welcome burst of generosity and hopefulness that spans the rest of this week. And though Venus-Jupiter is typically a lovely quality, this radiant crown of loving energy may be sitting atop many things which are less than glorious. Saturn, Pluto, Mercury and the Sun have been in Capricorn for the lead up to Venus’ kiss with Jupiter, bringing a sense of heaviness to our thoughts, general outlook and attempts to connect with others on a mental level.

This could spur Venus-Jupiter to a more escapist expression, perhaps by avoiding engaging in the complexity of life and opting instead for judgmental Saturn-Pluto’s strangely feel-good “black-and-white, good-and-evil” perspective on the world. One way to bring the relief, joy and happiness of Venus-Jupiter in a constructive way is to connect with various sweetnesses of this life. For example, we might try setting an intention to connect with someone in a meaningful way, and drop our guard long enough to have a conversation with a stranger or a neighbor we haven’t yet spoken with. Or we might volunteer to help our community in some way.

Switching it up

Real Imaginal’s weekly astrology outlook also notes communicative Mercury’s stressful square aspect to eccentric Uranus (exact Jan. 23) that may bring a surprise twist to events. If we’ve been more in tune with Venus-Jupiter sweetness, some information bearing the seriousness or gravity of Saturn-Pluto may intrude upon our reveries. On the other hand, if we’ve been absorbed in the traumatizing energetics of Saturn-Pluto, Mercury may bring news of another aspect of life on Earth that is not so gloomy and doom-y. The sense that we are trudging up a seemingly insurmountable mountain of history may be interrupted by an experience of grace.

Is it worth it? Get creative!

Of course, the long and seemingly fruitless battle with history, karma or decaying institutions in part reflects the combative Mars’ square to complicating Saturn in the sky (active roughly Jan. 11 to Jan. 30), which can frustrate our attempts to get ahead. Perseverance is prescribed, and sincere dedication (Saturn) to our efforts (Mars) will force us to review a couple of things: is what we are trying to do worth it? is it something we actually, truly care about? are we able to think creatively about achieving our goals? While the first two are the ultimate filters on how we may choose to direct our energy, this last question could bring a real boon to our mission. Mars makes a supportive trine aspect to resourceful Jupiter (exact Jan. 25), bringing a gift of inspiration to think beyond whatever limitations we may be facing. The obstacles we face now may therefore prove to be great allies in finding a new method, logic, collaborator or iteration of our designs.

Curiosity incoming

Lastly, the mind of Mercury escapes the inertia of the major Capricorn stellium that has dominated the skies since the beginning of January, when they follow the Sun into Aquarius on Jan. 23. The incoming Aquarian influence can help us take a step back from enmeshment in the problematic and be more curious about the world around us. It can also take us a little too far away from emotional realities, so while we cook up the next theory of how-to-set-everything-free (a favorite Aquarian pastime), it’s a good idea to stay in touch with how our theory actually feels in our bodies…and what others may report to us about their lived experiences. It could actually be quite wonderful! Just tune into the total organism.

2019 RETREATS  :::  SAVE THE DATE! I am excited to share that astrologer Renn Butler and I are offering another holotropic breathwork + archetypal astrology + dreamwork retreat July 28 – August 4, 2019!  Watch this space for more details!

A Path of Discernment: Astrology of July 17 – July 23, 2018

Whether you are midsummer or midwinter, the Sun is making his way through the last five degrees of the conflict-avoidant sign of Cancer, nuzzling up to an uncomfortable square aspect with Uranus. The First Quarter Moon on July 19 at 12:52pm US/Pacific provides the opportunity to shout about the grievances or griefs, unmet cravings or conflicts going on in your life which may have been boiling over since last week’s Cancer New Moon. Whether it is a good idea or a bad idea to shout it out may not matter much in the heat of the moment, but communications are unlikely to be entirely clear. On July 6, Mercury entered the shadow of the path of their upcoming retrograde, which tends to bring to the surface some of the more typical retrograde hijinks—failing to understand or to be understood, both forgetting and remembering important things or people, receiving new information which completely changes one’s outlook, understanding or opinion, and so on. However deeply you dove (or were dunked) into last week’s New Moon, there is more to come because it is not enough to receive new information or a new perspective—how your life must change as a result is an entirely different matter. The Sun in Cancer tends to look backwards in time, and as comforting as sentimentality can be, hanging onto a glaze of idealization over the past will prove increasingly problematic.

Along those lines, Venus begins to oppose the dreamtime of Neptune just as she makes a pleasant sextile to forgiving Jupiter (exact July 22) which might soften the edges of our judgment—both in good and bad ways. Much ink has been spilled over the spiritual dangers of “judging” situations, that is, appraising the value of people, things and events based on our personal notion of ethics (good and bad). In our haste to categorize things within our moral frameworks, we may miss crucial facts and fail to notice significant contradictions which would allow us to better understand why people do the things they do, or why something went down the way it did. On the other hand, absolute moral relativism—the idea that there really is no better or worse way and that all acts are equal—is even less likely to promote understanding and necessary moral reflection. This week, we might instead call upon the possibilities of discernment, which plays well with the spiritual triplets of empathy, humility and compassion. Let us not dehumanize others by either demonizing or lionizing them—saying someone is either completely evil or can do no wrong—or by dismissing them or their actions—failing to take up the hard work of relating to them as a fellow aspect of the divine. We have only begun to witness the potential for polarization (splitting the world into pairs of hostile opposites) in the long-term collective transit of Saturn-Pluto (2018 – 2021) but don’t overlook the power and importance of each gesture of empathy, humility and compassion, however small or however large.

Rounding out this week, the Sun will enter its home sign of Leo on July 22 and turn our attention to the incredibly active fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) of the summer of 2018. The Sun in Leo warms the heart and is much more extroverted than the Sun in Cancer. We can expect correlations to Mercury retrograde to amp up from this date, as we may feel more expressive, but don’t expect it to be all bad! Mercury’s retrograde is a wonderful time to reconnect with old friends and under these skies, that could come about by chance meetings or otherwise quite by surprise. Look back through any unfinished creative projects to see if there is anything you would like to bring back to life as this could bring you much joy. This Leo season (until Aug. 22), be open to new or even whimsical creative urges but take a playful stance towards them—they may be just a practice ground for something completely different, or a fleeting prayer offered up to the beauty of the cosmos.

Kickstarting Decisions: Astrology of Apr. 10 – Apr. 16, 2018

Welcome to the second week of April 2018 and the Aries New Moon, which is strongly associated with new beginnings, fresh starts and the renewal of a cycle. The Sun squares Pluto and Venus trines Mars (exact Apr. 10), providing some of us with some insight into a struggle for power in our lives. Venus is sitting pretty in her home sign of sensuous, earthy Taurus and also making an opposition with Jupiter in the depths of Scorpio, but the total astrological picture suggests we may need to consciously call in the juicy, open-heartedness that Venus-Jupiter aspect suggests. It’s juicy in that it’s still complicated. Taurus gets a rap of being “simple,” but in the presence of insecurity it can also exhibit jealousy or possessiveness. While this could relate to relationships between people, it could certainly apply to possessiveness of material or worldly goods, or even jealousy of others’ (apparent) spiritual power, knowledge or higher learning. I define power as the ability to cause or prevent change, which arises from the fact of communion, or being deeply related to all things. If you want to engage in power as if it is an object that must be taken or grabbed from another, then you will join a common crowd in misunderstanding the nature of change. But for the next two to three weeks, you may also find such efforts quite self-destructive.

We notice that Venus also makes a sextile with Neptune, the planet of divine dreams and delusion (exact Apr. 12) as if trying to pour some love and prayerful intention into what looks to be an ambitious and perhaps unsettling week. Maybe she is reminding us that power isn’t something that anyone has or owns, but is rather something that is created from an interactive process. “The universe is a communion of subjects, not a collection of objects” according to the theologian and ecological thinker Thomas Berry. Stopping to consider our options from this perspective—that power is not so much a possession but more of an interactive force—can help bring awareness to an open window we hadn’t noticed for all our pounding on a closed door. Perhaps we will find it is just a hop down to the ground and out of the building we feel so trapped in right now. (Okay, some of you may have to climb out on a tree limb, but it will be a sturdy friend!)

Turning our attention to the New Moon happening on April 15 at 5:57pm US/Pacific, it’s worth noting that Mercury returns to direct motion in the early hours of that day. Decisions may be taken that have been under consideration or review for the last couple of weeks, as hesitance turns to action. Confusion may slowly lift as Mercury gets back up to speed over the next few days, though there may be some lingering interference with mental clarity. Sharpness may come in other forms—biting criticism, or heavy judgment—while for others, emotional distortions may prolong the confusion as Mercury retraces their steps until leaving the “shadow” of their retrograde on May 2. Be open to questioning your own narratives of events—take a critical perspective and entertain contrary possibilities. Yet the ultimate arbiter will be the depth of your connection to your higher self or highest good, which can best assist with navigating any uncharted or dicey terrain over the next two weeks.

The configuration of this Aries New Moon, with a close conjunction of Sun, Moon and Uranus, speaks of change and a desire for forward movement. If you know you are in a moment of change, you could anticipate a Uranian unexpected or Trickster quality imprinted upon the seeds of renewal or beginning/ending you plant at this time. Trickster can be a bit of a killjoy for our ego at times, but make no mistake: Trickster made this world.

If you recognize you are standing at a crossroads, it is well worth it to make some time to connect to your higher self, your Soul, your deepest knowing, to the divine good—however you conceive of that—and ask for any protector or helper deities, angels, guardians with which you have a relationship or affinity to stand with you. You might pray or intend for your own generosity of spirit, and include a litany of gratitude in the welcoming of what this Aries New Moon brings. Harness Venus-Jupiter’s open heart to the highest good for all beings, for yourself and for everyone and ask for the insight and the wisdom to hear and understand what is revealed to you in the coming weeks. Rooting into your highest good is the most powerful rudder for those who feel hard pressed to either embrace or make a change.

We might all well reflect on a version of the Serenity Prayer sometimes heard in 12-Step Programs: “God grant me the Serenity to accept the people I cannot change, the Courage to change the one I can, and the Wisdom to know that it’s me.”

And in this way, Mars, Saturn and Pluto, who are currently colliding in determined Capricorn, could be turned towards the strength to serve a great discernment, a Great Work, perhaps even your role in the dream of the Earth. And should this be relevant to your life: it’s a fitting time for severing ties to the past which impede your growth and which may in fact endanger your life in some way—metaphorically, or even physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. If there is this aspect in your life, it is unlikely to be coming from nowhere, but will rather be rooted in something ancient, something known, perhaps an old pattern you haven’t quite shaken loose. Be kind to yourself—you deserve nothing less!
